Grandmother jailed over WWII 'family heirloom' pistol

Gail Cochrane, 53, had kept the gun for 29 years following the death of her father, who had been in the Royal Navy. Police found the weapon, a Browning self-loading pistol, during a search of her home in Dundee while looking for her son. She admitted illegal possession of the firearm, an offence with a minimum five-year jail term under Scots law. Cochrane told the High Court in Edinburgh that she had never contemplated she might be committing a crime by keeping the gun or that she might need to get a licence for the weapon. She said: "I thought it was just a war trophy."...

Which is why I stand against the UK form and style of government advancing in the U.S.A. Those people are influencing our leaders over here and I believe they should be obstructed.

Better to have a president like the last one who thinks God is talking to him telling him to wage war in the middle east annd beyond? Sure that sounds much better.

a person without a gun is a subject.
a person with a gun is a citizen.

A sound byte without an audience is just an opinion. Or really bad prose.

Oh, shit, I'm sorry, she is a white person of northern European ancestry. That means she gets a pass, as she really didn't mean to break the law, and absolute application of the law only applies to brown and yellow people. It most certainly does NOT apply to normal whites folks, if it was an honest mistake. No sireee, bub.

You clearly don't actually read all the posts on here.

A five-year prison sentence for these circumstances is a travesty of justice. She's not a gangster who used a gun in crime. This is just a technical paperwork offense, and should be nothing more than a citation, like a traffic ticket, with a moderate fine.

Like it or not.... That is the law in that Country and they have voted for those laws.

To have this grandmother sharing a prison cell with a serious felon, should cause people to realize that something is seriously amiss.

Maybe, but that is THEIR call to make.

To those who approve of this sentence, beware: If you don't protest now when such travesties are happening to others, don't be surprised when no one cares when they come for YOU.

It is a different Country.... I have no say there, just like they have no say here.

What do you want to do? Personally invade and free her?

They chose the laws, they have to live with them.

So you're okay with the Taliban hanging a 7-year-old boy as a spy, because, well, that's their law. Therefore it's okay? You have no objection to that sentence?

I have read every post in this thread, as well as the bullshit from the compassionless conservatives in the anti illegal immigration threads.

The common theme is that enforcement of the law is absolute only against those that are not white and not of northern european ancestry.

I despise hateful racist assholes, expecially when they advocate 1st degree murder, and the casual infliction of pain and suffering on those nasty "illegals".

The nice grandma got herself caught up in the legal system. She committed the crrime and must do the time. There is no "grey area" when it comes to law enforcemaent, IF you are a right wing conservative.

Me, I would expect that a decent legal system operated by reasonable people who aren't blinded by conservative ideaology would figure out a way to let granny resolve her mistake without overly harsh punishment. As she is NOT in the US legal system, she has a prayer...

Actually, a fine is likely the worst she would get here, and that is stretching it.

I didn't claim that he said that. I'm asking a question to clarify his thinking.

It bugs me when people just blindly accept whatever laws happen to be in effect, without bothering to think about whether or not the law is actually just. I'm simply asking him what his opinion is using his own judgment. Folks should be able to make moral determinations on their own, without consulting some law book. The law books sometimes do things that aren't right. And the Taliban law book that says it's okay to hang 7-year-old kids, is wrong. So that's a good test case to force people to think for themselves, outside the security-blanket of what someone else says is right, via "the law".

In my opinion, anyone who can't unambiguously state that hanging 7-year-old children is wrong, is a ... (word omitted to avoid a personal insult)

Nonsense... That is all you decipher from it.

There is no gray area according to the law in that land.

I guess you didn't actually read the article either.... I guess you consider *Scotland* to be filled with "compassionless conservatives", and the woman in question to be "not white", and the legal system over there to be "right wing conservative", and " blinded by conservative ideaology"

Like I said... It is pretty clear you didn't read anything.

This is about a WHITE person *IN* EUROPE being held to a blind standard.

Like I said... It is clear you have not read anything here.

I clearly wrote what I wrote... Read it again.

Pay particular attention to post #11, the sentence that started with "While *I* think it is stupid...." And then for fun read the sentences that follow.

And are you ready to personally invade to prevent it? Or do you think that the governed are responsible for their own government?

Just trying to get you to realize that your opinion does not mean law. And that people should be free to run their own lives to INCLUDE deciding how they want to be governed.

Would YOU be OK if the UN said we could not use capital punishment at all? Cause YOU are trying to impose YOUR views on others.... Exactly the same thing.

Well, all things considered, yes, yes it does sound better. President Bush responded to an act of war against the U.S.A. on 11 SEP 01.

I am not going to discuss the justification for OEF/OIF. However, how many of your countrymen were killed that day?
Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. They only last for an instant but it is a Holy Instant. Let your soul absorb them.
