Destroying a private company's stock value Do you actually know what libel is? Actually: 1. On the one hand, there is such a thing as business libel/defamation. It's an actionable tort (i.e., a civil wrong for which a lawsuit can be filed to remedy). 2. On the other hand, the U.S. government has sovereign immunity against defamation claims; i.e., unlike a private party, the US government can get away with (for example) business libel because sovereign immunity shields it from being sued. So what you are saying is that Obama could go on TV and verbally commit and dedicate himself to the destruction of BP, in a speech, and cause their stock to plummet, and nothing legally could be done about it?
