OK. So the equivalent would be that all non-American immigrants to the US would have to pass a basic English language test before being granted a visa. (Note that would mean that Mexicans, Puerto Ricans and Argentinians wouldn't have to speak the language, but that Germans and Israelis would be barred from the US unless they spoke English.) billvon 3,120 #9 June 10, 2010 >That would be non NORTH American And if the original post had mentioned Northern Europe your post might make sense. But as it is, it did not; it mentioned all of Europe, where a great many languages are spoken. In the Americas many languages are spoken as well (although fewer than in Europe.) But at least it will keep those damn Germans out. >Google maps will show you the continents if you need a refresher. Yes, it will. Google that continent South of us. The visa being referred to is in regards to those who wish to reside there, like our permanent resident visa. I think its a great idea as the article mentions how learning the language for those residents allows them to contribute to society, unlike the US where the Illegals take so much from it.You live more in the few minutes of skydiving than many people live in their lifetime

So you're saying that the illegals in the UK contribute to society? And in the US the residents don't? You're not comparing apples to apples here. If you're talking about how great the UK's visa requirements are, then you are talking about legal immigrants. Do you have any problems with legal immigrants here in the US? billvon 3,120 #16 June 10, 2010 >Oh come on - Twist his words if you want - you know the context. Yes, I do. But this story is about how LEGAL immigrants now have a new requirement on what they have to do before they can LEGALLY immigrate to the UK. If implemented here it would not help with illegal immigration - it would just keep a few more legal immigrants out. So what would be the benefit of keeping legal immigrants out of the US? Do you think that changing the requirements for legal immigration will really do a thing to stop illegal immigration? Because it sure sounded like the previous poster was against the "Illegals." Is that how a >moderator should behave? Dude, you just posted a link to a story about requirements for legal immigrants, then added a little rant about how bad illegal immigration was for the US. It would be like a newbie posting something about how too many skydivers die from landing accidents, and therefore there should be a law requiring AAD's. If someone did that, would you just agree with them so you wouldn't be accused of "tearing it apart on all ends?"
