1969912 0 #109 June 15, 2010 QuoteHow about we don't limit the work of the cleanup and fix to the unions? Yeah. There seems to be some "shovel ready" work there, and BP will pay for it. There are also several countries with specialized skimmer ships that have offered the use of those ships. Turns out there's a law (Jones Act?) that prohibits it. Waivers are possible, but for some reason not forthcoming. I'm sure that's it. you're a smart guy. maybe you can do better research that we can and tell us WHY those foreigh skimmer ships that have offered to help haven't been granted the waivers mentioned above in order to allow them to proceed. I know you can do better than pithy sarcasm. I've seen it.-- Rob

They have been. US dredging and spill-response companies have been fighting that, but from what I can tell, the US has made the request and they are on their way. If you are referring to the Jones act, I have not seen any ships kept out of the Gulf because of that. Most of the noise about the Jones act seems to be coming from unions, who want to keep foreigners out of what they consider "their arena."

billvon 3,100 #117 June 15, 2010 >The waiver of the Jones act has been denied. Uh, OK. Not sure where you heard that, but OK. So what does it matter? The Jones Act prohibits foreign ships from carrying cargo between US coastal ports. It says nothing about skimmer ships or environmental remediation.
