Lawmaker, Suspected Illegal Immigrant Heats Up Debate According to the report, the suspect "just laughed, slurring that he was going to go back to 'my country' Mexico. 'Nothing is going to happen to me, man.'" Though the suspect is being held after his blood alcohol content registered at .25, Massachusetts State Police spokesman David Procopio told FoxNews.com that state policy prohibits police from looking into the suspect's immigration status. That's after Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick rescinded an order three years ago by his predecessor Mitt Romney that empowered state police to enforce immigration law. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/05/24/car-crash-involving-mass-lawmaker-suspected-illegal-immigrant-heats-debate/Please don't dent the planet. futuredivot 0 #2 May 28, 2010 At least the issue is no respecter of status. My IT manager has had 2 cars totaled by unlicensed, uninsured drivers of suspect immigration status-in both cases the guy disappeared after making bail leaving my pal with no recourse to replace his vehicle. You are only as strong as the prey you devour

I presume that you mean that the "uninsured motorist" coverage under your friend's own insurance policy kicked in and paid. That's the type of situation that that coverage is for. In the last case it was a 90-something Ranger so he didn't collect enough to replace the vehicle-he's still out a farm truck and Pedro is back across the border or at least long gone enough to never pay.You are only as strong as the prey you devour

For a biker, that line item could be more than everything else combined, and few carry it as a result. For cagers, it's still a nuisance fee that law abiding drivers shouldn't have to pay for. I'm all for confiscation of cars when their drivers around found to be uninsured (and esp if unlicensed as well).

I think having it is a good idea, if you can afford it. It provides you with a source of recompense not only if the other driver is uninsured (or under-insured; that's the "UIM"), but also if the other driver hits you & runs & cannot be identified.
