Free Speech vs Corporations in South Korea

Recommended Posts

Quote

"In South Korea, it's considered taboo to criticize the chaebols," said Kim Ky-won, professor of economics at Korea National Open University. "They hold very close to absolute power."

Most critical stories run in smaller media less dependent on ads from big companies. Major media reports are mostly limited to breaking news of prosecutions of chaebol leaders but seldom probe deeper, critics say.

Sounds A lot like the Liberal Media and the Obama administration to me.

That's some interesting "kill the messenger" logic right there. :o

Do you not see the correlation?

Because, we all know that, the EIB and FoxNews have been brought up on defamation charges by the Omaba Administration. That's how it works in America. We all know that. The "liberal media" gets away with anything they want to when they attack Republicans and the Administration put the right wing media out of business.

(sigh)

Getting back to reality, there are laws in certain states that make it a crime to criticize their agriculture businesses; corn, cattle . . .

Serious as I have never heard of that and I have been in Iowa most of my life

During the period of global concern about "Mad Cow" Oprah got sued by the meat industry for saying she wasn't going to eat hamburgers.

While I understand there were billions of dollars on the line, FFS, a person still ought to be able to express an opinion about it.

Not since I started wearing my foil hat.

Hmm

Is it too tight?
Is it cutting off blood flow or O2?

Maybe
did you see a film of how she said what she said?

I think that case is still ongoing

Of course this could never happen in the US . . .

. . . unless the chaebol you were talking about was the food industry.

Additionally, both South Korean civil and criminal codes regarding defamation

This is interesting stuff. "Defamation" - even if true - can carry a criminal sanction. Not just civil liability. Imagine a country where a satire that came out in September, 09 referring to the instaiable sexual appetite of Tiger Woods was made. Criminal sanction possible.

Sometimes I really am glad that the US is a place where speech - even by those whose viewpoints I despise - can be performed without the overriding threat of criinal sanction.

Even by corporations and unions...

As Americans, you and I are spoiled. There are a lot of countries in the world in which defamation not only has a much broader definition, but is even criminalized, including, I believe a few Western-style democracies (republics; whatever). And the US is practically the only country in the world in which "prior restraint" is prohibited.

Hmmm. This is new to me. It doesn't look like there have been many Constitutional challenges to these laws - for I could see a court striking a statute such as these for being Unconstitutional.

It's pretty neat that you and I differ on some things but on this issue you and I seem to be in full agreement. Perhaps it's that our jobs have allowed us to see the real risks associated with chilling speech.

I had to read and understand first. You know how stupid us un-edumicated conservative types are. My liberal translator was broken.

Breen also wrote that Samsung, "the rock upon which the Korean economy rests, sent traditional year-end cards offering best wishes for 2010 to the country's politicians, prosecutors and journalists along with [$50,000] gift certificates."

LMAO...what are they making cars now instead of cheap electronic entertainment units?!?!

Personally, I like Samsung...they've made alot of rednecks happy!
