skinnay 0 #2 April 26, 2010 This is an old jewish joke, why is it so offensive now? http://www.jewishmag.com/40mag/humor/humor.htm
wmw999 2,589 #3 April 26, 2010 It's not all that offensive. It is, however, mildly hypocritical to tell jokes like that when you're trying to uphold principles of political correctness. If congresscritters have been criticized for telling racist jokes, it's probably fair to criticize a general for telling a religionist joke. That it's kind of stupid to pop someone for a single joke works both ways, too, whether it's racist, sexist, religionist, or whatever. You pop for repeated words, or behavior. To me, repeated words IS behavior. You know they offend, you're reminded of it, and you keep doing it -- that's behavior. Wendy P.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. winsor 236 #4 April 26, 2010 There are rather a few jokes that are self-depricating when told by members of a given community, but are generally considered off-limits for outsiders. This goes for Irish, Homosexuals, Poles, Negroes, Jews, and what have you. It gets dicey when someone is of mixed origin. If someone is, for example, Navajo, Manchurian, Sikh and Sicilian - which jokes will be okay to the purebloods of each ethnic persuasion? In politics it is usually best to stay clear of jokes that refer to stereotypes, however well-earned they may be. Earl Butz got canned for telling funny jokes ("you no playa da game, you no makea da rules!"), not for being a lousy Secretary of Agriculture (IIRC). In any event, I thought it was a funny joke.
