Gawain 0 #1 April 21, 2010 The Senate placed a largely symbolic vote, overwhelmingly against a VAT. It breaks again, President Obama's promises not to raise taxes on those making less than $200/250K/Salary of the Day.... BOHICA...So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! DanG 1 #3 April 22, 2010 The second article doesn't even come close to showing that Obama is a "Yes" on a VAT. All he says is that he wants to consider different ways of dealing with ther deficit, and that a VAT has worked for other countries. The fact that he doesn't stand up on his chair and yell, "No VAT" is not the same as "Yes VAT". He's a thoughtful person who wants his advisers to have a wide berth for studying problems. I know this was anathema to the "Decider", who only wanted to hear support for his preconceived conclusions. Having all options open for consideration results in a better decision. - Dan G

Gawain 0 #6 April 22, 2010 QuoteThe second article doesn't even come close to showing that Obama is a "Yes" on a VAT. Just like he did with the health care legislation? Just like just now indicated in another "flop" in his speech on Wall Street this morning? He is not thoughtful, he's calculating. If he can get a wiff of support on this, it will get rammed through. Most of Europe has VAT in place and they can't control their spending or deficits any better. Greece just had its ratings lowered again, with the advisory that they'll be under review again. Germany, France, England...all have VAT...can't fill the debt. VAT is a complex system that, when coupled against the already high local sales taxes, you've increased prices on everything. Couple this with Cap-and-Tax...and again...These are the President's goals. He's said so himself, to get the control he wants the government to have, "...prices would necessarily skyrocket..." With variables such as supply and demand, the VAT distorts the market. Price goes up, demand goes down. It's a deadweight. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! DanG 1 #7 April 22, 2010 I agree the VAT is a bad idea. I just disagree with your conclusion that Obama wants to "ram it through" because he said that he wants his advisers to consider all options. I think you're reaching. MDMP, you know. Weight all the options and come up with the best ones. - Dan G
