Changing words doesn't change my patriotism or my faith in God.

Sure it does, unless your patriotism or faith is unexamined.

The Declaration of Independence is the source document that spells out the principles the United States was founded on. If those principles are altered, how can you still be a patriot in the same way?

If John 3:16 was changed to: For God so loved the world that he gave them beer so they could drink and be merry, the underlying meaning is completely changed, as would be your faith.

That's why it really is important. I think I get what you're saying - that you are a patriot no matter if some people are able to change a few words around and that's great. The point I'm making is that if we continue to change things here and there as a matter of convenience to the belief of the day, generations down the road there will be a disconnect. I think we're already seeing it to some degree today.

The pledge has been changed at least 4-5 times. Did those changes altar your patriotism. I'll repeat what I said earlier. "To me" and maybe only me ... it is much to ado about nothing. If someone changes the pledge, the declaration, the bible, it does not alter me unless I want it to. Just MY opinion.

I've never seen Red Skelton talking this seriously about anything. He was a good hearted person....But I don't really go along with his ideas about God though. This seems like a narrow minded perspective. Not everyone is a Christian in our country. I wonder why this needs to be in the Pledge of Allegiance.....

Maybe I didn't word that very well. What I was really trying to say is that many do not believe in a creator. Why should my children be forced to recite a declaration in school that has mumbo jumbo in it?......I don't mean to tread on anyone else's beliefs, but I'd hope that people are open minded enough to see that many people are not believers in a god of any sort.....

I grew up watching him too, mostly because my parents watched him. (I am 54). Hell, everybody seemed to watch him, he was right up there with Lucy and Hope and the other greats of the time.

I don't understand the point of someone dragging his memory into a current politically-driven debate. It is completely out of context.

For the recotd, this posters favorite skits were Gertrude and Heathcliff.

You don't have to a christian to believe in God
God, Alla, Yeweh, Gia (spelling?)
And you don't have to be a christian to live by christian values.

98 percent of the piece is about the meaning of the words in the pledge before the "under God" part was added. I thought it was pretty awesome.

This was actually a dignified country when he was a kid, I get him and respect his time and his people with their attitudes toward this country. Since the "under God" entered, the country declined, not that it had anything to do with it neccessarily, just bad timing. Turds like Reagan became neo-cons and the fools bought into it and here we have it; a mess.
