His entire post, instead, consists of yelling at someone who doesn't believe the government should provide environmental, competition, and safety regulations. I'm not sure who he's yelling at as I thought I made it quite clear that we stand in agreement on those issues in my last post.

i don't see any 'yelling'. is yourmomma really against environmental, competition and safety regulations?

I was referring to the extended string of slurs and cursing, but I suppose I might have misread the tone. If you sing his post aloud to polka music, it's actually quite friendly sounding.

You could sing the necronomicon to polka music and it would sound friendly too. :P

>no, its historical value

Its historical average value is around $6.35. Its maximum, ever, was $9.40. (or $10.06 in 2008 dollars.) So you really want the historical MAXIMIM value, apparently.

that's right :)
(plus catchup for the undervaluing of the last few decades - or i suppose we wait for another asset bubble and another and another...)

Sounds like you want reparations... ;)

and you want another asset bubble and another doubling of the national deficit ;)

(meanwhile i propose stabilising the economy by increasing the value of what really backs the dollar - the workers)

>like slaves had an incentive to escape
Yep. 'Cept now you're free to do whatever you like.

LIES! If that were even vaguely true we'd all be professional skydivers, ballerinas, firemen and astronauts.

Right now I can't even be what I'm trained to be, let alone what I'd like to be. Stop spreading lies bill. ;)

Nobody wants to work the undignified jobs that are paid minimum wage. Nobody. However, without somebody doing them society would collapse like a deboned cow and businesses across the country would fold in an instant. THAT'S why there has to be a minimum wage; to ensure the survival of the society people better off have become accustomed to. It's a necessary evil. Deal with it.

What that minimum wage should be is up for debate, but I personally feel if a person is making minimum wage he ought to be able to pay his rent in a minimum home, afford food, heath care and transportation to and from that minimum wage job that makes society work for the rest of us. He ought to be able to do that and still have time to train himself for a better life if he chooses to pursue it, so he shouldn't have to work an outrageous number of hours in a day to just to live. It's the only "human" answer.

I agree. Any full time job should pay enough to live on. What a disgrace that people work 40 hours a week and end up not making enough for even bare necessities.
And the same people that think that is OK, see nothing wrong with others making a million dollars a day. Excuse me while I go puke.
But what do I know?

As long as there are people are willing to accept minimum wage, companies will pay them that.

Basic economics of supply and demand apply here as well. :)

What you're saying is, companies would pay them less, but it's against the law. Brilliant. That's not supply and demand. That's just keeping their asses out of jail.

Any job at minimum wage in the US IS enough to live on - provided you don't want steak every night, a bigscreen TV, a big apartment and a nice car. Even here in San Diego, you can live on $1200 a month.

I guess if you live in a tent on the DZ you might be right. Most people can't do that.

Can't or won't?

No cell phone, no cable TV, no computer or internet, no eating out, no going out to movies, and on and on.

Small efficiency apartment in an unpleasant neighborhood, cheap beater car with only liability insurance.

Throw in food stamps and even less income is required.

It's amazing how cheap someone can live, if they realize the difference between luxuries and necessities.

Or share an apartment. Or live in a trailer. Or housesit. Lots of options other than the single occupancy apartment in the nice part of town.

If there were people willing to work for less and they could pay less they would.

However if enough people refused to work for that little or demanded more, they'd pay more.

Such is the flaw with minimum wage and why there are so many illegal immigrants working off the books.

Minimum wage (or twice minimum wage half-time) is enough for bare necessities. It'll keep you clothed (you might shop at good will for expensive things like coats), feed you, and rent you a whole room where rent isn't too high (elsewhere you'll need a room mate). A lot of places it'll get you an inexpensive car, and elsewhere it'll pay for a bicycle or bus fare.

It'll get you a refrigerator (99.9% of us have one) and color television (98.9%). It'll probably even let you have cable (64% of households earning less than $15,000 a year have satellite or cable). Most families earning under $15,000 a year (57%) have a washing machine so they don't even need to go to the laundromat.

You may have to do without a cellular phone though - only 23% of households earning under $15,000 a year have one.

Minimum wage is not enough to support what most first-world residents consider to be a pleasant lifestyle.
