Just wondering why there is stuff for "help the victims of the earthquake in haiti", but I'm not seeing anything about chile.

Not to dismiss any of the pain and suffering in Chile, but Haiti is actually a much bigger problem.

Kinda odd

Mainly because Chile has a working government, a financial surplus, adequate prior earthquake preparation (which includes a lack of corruption that ensured building codes would be followed).

Hati has no working government, little building codes, and is horribly corrupt.
A couple hundred thousand dead vs a couple hundred. Millions homeless vs a few thousand.

Significant amounts of help needed vs not so much (but still some needed and being given).

Hati needs everything

Chile needs a few specific things, mainly comm and water and food. They have made specific requests, and are recieving them.

Agreed. While it has been a very sad time (though thankfully, all of my loved ones down there are fine and no one had a home collapse or anything like that), Chile is 'used' to earthquakes and building are built to withstand earthquakes.

That said, my aunt who is an architect down there was telling my mom that even if building are designed to handle quakes, the reason the devastation is so great in Concepcion is that a quake of this magnitude is beyond any building code requirements or protection.

I've been monitoring the news quite a bit since then and though the people of Haiti need the aid far more than Chile does, it has been touching to see the gestures and prayers for the Chileans affected by the quake - especially those from the other South American people.

There's a principle in the news business: The further away from home something is, the less newsworthy it becomes.

That's very true; and it's the reason I try to read BBCnews.com and/or watch the BBC news broadcast on TV regularly. To read or watch the US news media, you'd think that the only worthwhile news that's made occurs either in the US or the Iraq/Afghanistan theaters. Maybe a little bit from Europe, as a nod to "the old countries". How often do you read/hear about South America, Africa or Asia in the US news media? (How about next to never?)

Chile is far more prepared since they get big earthquakes fairly frequently. Most of the people of Chile have experienced EQ in their lifetimes.
Haiti has not had a big one in a couple hundred years, almost no one in Haiti had been subjected to one....EVER.
