How safe is your neighborhood?

Recommended Posts

Just caught this little website. I haven't really gotten into the nitty gritty to see what all it can do, but at least it's something.... http://www.crimereports.com/

Any other sites out there that do this?

Be interesting to know their criteria. They must not include DWI's because it returned 0 crimes and I am certain that is not true. The biggest danger in our area is the idiots who drive our rural roads with incredible complacency.

Must not report anything but registered sex offenders for our area. I put in an 8 month window (the most it would allow) and opened it up for ALL crimes (including vehicle stops), and still got 0.

I think the most important stat you can know about your neighborhood is average police response time. Unless you live in a shithole (I've lived in some) it's pretty unlikely you'll get broken into on any given night. But knowing how long you'll have to fend for yourself after you make the call is very useful information.

the PD that covers my neighborhood does periodic response time checks. Range for the past 2 years has been 3-7 minutes with a median just over 5min. Not bad all things considered, but still a hell of a long time when the seconds count.

Officers are typically very limited when they can run Code 3 (lights and siren) due to people having sued over the last 30 years. So now officers just have to get there. Remember that next time you see a patrol car trying to go a little quicker then traffic. Move over and let that officer pass. Even calls like family violence (domestics), burglary alarms and robbery alarms are not typical Code 3 responses!

As for neighborhoods, I have a very unique understanding of crime rates in my city. That's why I picked where I live, property crime is fairly low as is persons crime. There are also a LOT of LEO that live in my subdivision, which is nice.

I witnessed something very bizarre the other day. Where I live the police rarely use their sirens. They usually only have their lights flashing when they are off investigating some call. Anyway I am heading south stopped at a traffic light, the light turns green for the north bound traffic just as a cop arrives from the east at the intersection with their lights on and the cop wants to turn right heading north. I could not believe what I saw, the northbound traffic did not yield to the cop with their lights flashing. The cop had to gun it in the merge lane just to get ahead of all these north bound yahoos. It should be common knowledge around where I live, when you see an emergency vehicle with their lights flashing you preferably pull over and stop or at the very least yield to them.

BTW ... I live in a safe area. But that does not mean there is no crime. The other week a woman was murdered in her home by her husband. But it is still a very safe part of the city. Property crime is low and besides domestic violence, the only time you hear of crime in my neck of the woods is when it is related to drug gangs and in this case it is not really the street crime it is more a case of some gangster popping off another gangster in their respective upscale homes.

I live in a good neighborhood and entered my address into familywatchdog.com...I groaned when I saw how many registered sex offenders live in my area[:/] I know they're everwhere, but its different when they are in YOUR neighborhood! (virtually swatting them with my broom) Get out, all of you!! Out, Out, Out! :P

And for the record: the appropriate ranking of cool modes of transportation is jet pack, hover board, transporter, Batmobile, and THEN giant ant.

I know what you mean. There are 3 sex offenders living within a mile of my house and I live in a small rural community of 2000+/-. :|
