They may have lost money last year so one needs to know the starting point. There are citations in the article. These are the two relevant references for that quote. Unfortunately (or fortunately from an employment standpoint) I don't have time to look up the cited 10-k filings. 12) Company 10-k filings with the Securities & Exchange Commission, selected financial data tables. 13) Bureau of Labor Statistics. I may get a chance to look late too as I am curious because my company just changed to Anthem Although we may be a bit different because the company I work for self insures and just hires an administrative company who gets paid by the case"America will never be destroyed from the outside, if we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." The gov is the parasite, not the the HC industry. But I understand, there has got to be demon. Bil oil, big auto, big coal, big insurance, what next? I wouldn't include the auto companies with that elite list of offenders. What's next? Big Pharma. Where I live the pharmacies are now more plentiful and architecturally dominating than the banks. Apparently, to live in America you have to pay a lot of money to take a lot of drugs so you can be just like those happy people on the TV ads. "Side Effects May Include...nausea, vomiting, headaches, heartburn, hair loss, diarrhea, dry mouth, water retention, painful rectal itch, hallucination, dementia, psychosis, coma, death, halitosis, lung cancer, mental retardation, brain tumors, paralyzation, sleep loss, internal bleeding, internal combustion, a sudden craving to sniff your carpet, an addiction to cocaine, heroin, PCP, speed and Windex, bone weakening, claustrophobia, acne, playing Everquest II, regular PMS, making Jesus cry, the inability to use proper english in an online environment, homosexuality, AIDS, an urge to stab your spouse, inability to breathe oxygen, urge to watch the Chinese version of Friends, migraines, diabetes, deafness...same as sugar pill." you forgot my favorite, anal leakage. Like the one for stop smoking that says suicidal tendancies and sometimes death. isn't why you want to stop smoking is to prolong your life?

justinb138 0 #58 February 25, 2010 Quote My (employer based) health insurance expense has probably doubled in the last decade, not counting increased co-pays, deductibles, drug tier increases, etc. The program that funded my position was cut and I had to find money elsewhere. While making the transition I was told I was going to receive a pay increase. After taking a closer look at my benefits package they realized that they could no longer afford to give me that raise. I was fortunate to not lose any salary. Anthem now has that raise. Our new Governor just told us that he was going to give us a one time 3% bonus at the end of 2011 but that we could expect no raises through 2012......oh....and that our health care expenses are going up again. Meanwhile......"Recent economic data show that profits for the ten largest insurance companies increased 250 percent between 2000 and 2009, ten times faster than inflation." While I have no problems with my health care providers, the insurance companies are parasites who are trying to find out exactly how much they can bleed their hosts without killing (all) of them. The comparison to inflation might be relevant if health care costs were increasing at the same rate, which they're not. I don't have time to look at the numbers, but it's entirely possible that their profits did increase 250% while their profit margin stayed exactly the same. Spinning it as "profits increased 250%!" is just an attempt at creating populist outrage with people that don't know any better.
