QuoteI have wondered what Jim Bob does for a living. I'd imagine a family of that size requires an income of at least $100,000 per year, if not more. That house certainly must have cost a bundle to build, and pay monthly bills on. I suspect they made a deal with the TV production company, just like the Gosselins did.
QuoteI believe they own commercial property that they rent out for income. They also receive 100,000 grand per episode plus they receive private donations.
They have no medical insurance.

Was Jim Bob also a former state representative or something? I remember reading something about that when they were on their 15th kid or thereabouts...
"Jim Bob is a former politician who served in the Arkansas House of Representatives from 1999 to 2002. The Duggars say their income is derived from the commercial properties they own.
The Duggars live debt-free... Their 7,000 square-foot house was built by hand by the Duggar family themselves over the course of three years with minimal assistance from friends, primarily in the form of instruction. The home was completed on January 20, 2006."
Jim Bob Duggar also confirmed on the April 13, 2009 Larry King Interview that his family does have health insurance, but they carry a $2500 deductible to keep costs down.

Quote[Reply]but I suppose raising racist children is technically not child abuse either.
Yes. Just like raising religion hatin' kids.
My daughter is now 19 and I have never discussed religion with her at all, in fact I was very careful to avoid all conversations about it when she was around. Her mom is very religious and attends church a couple of times a week but never forces it on my daughter, who chooses not to attend.
I believe how you raised your daughter was wrong. In my belief system, it borders on child abuse. It's insane for parents to be allowed to ignore potentially life changing subjects.
How's that sit with ya?

She is now old enough to make an INFORMED choice if she wants to be superstitious. It would also be hard for me to get her to beleive in Santa or the Easter bunny now that she has the abliity to reason.

hopefully, he doesn't give a crap - just like people that choose to raise their kids different from jclalor don't give a crap about his opinions on the matter
only when his ilk, or the other ilk start to interfere in the lives of others with their subjective opinions on the subject should we care
calling raising a kid with or without religious beliefs "child abuse" is totally nuts - just making it clear that they have no clue what the term really means - but hijacking the term would go fine with our history of diluting the meaning of strong words

If people are so in favor of bringing their children up with "Christian values" then why do they not give them the whole thing. I wonder how a six year old would react to hearing that god smashes babies heads against rocks (Psalms 137:9) or having bears maul 42 children for simply teasing a bald man (Kings2:27-9) Maybe the story of Lot offering up his virgin daughters to be raped by horny angels so they would leave some men alone that lot had as guest at his house. (Genesis 19:6) or better yet when the daughters get there father Lot drunk and then fuck him in able to get pregnant with their fathers sperm (Genesis 19:23-25 30-60)
And lets not forget lot was a good and righteous man in the eyes of god.
No need to even mention all the Egyptian children having their throats slashed by God.
But we don't teach our kids any of this stuff, this mite spook them just a bit. It's better to start them off with A feel good Noah story or little baby Jesus in the manger with the cute little animals.
So when we tell our young children how wonderful God is, lets give them the WHOLE bible, not just the warm and fuzzy stuff. sure there is a ton of good old fashioned sex and violence in the good book,
so lets not deprive the little ones from learning why god smashes the heads of babies against rocks or offers little girls to be raped. I just love a good christian value filled bible story.
The truth is, parents only teach the parts that won't freak out their kids.

Jesus did not say he was going to change the old laws (Matthew 5:17-19) but fulfill them. The only rules that are ever changed are the one that fit a particular religions needs. Some are just more extreme than others (Duggars). There is still plenty of nonsense in the NT just like the OT.
The bread and butter of the christian right is still the OT, capital punishment, gay marriage, Prayer in schools, creationism and blah blah blah blah blah.

He not only makes changes to the law, he also also assigns a heirachy to it. See Matt 22:37-40Quotewhat they are doing is not even remotely close to child abuse.
Not really abuse, but my expereince having worked in Residence Life at a christian school does seem to indicates that emerging out from under that umbrella of ultra fundamentalism 's a serious fucking case of culture shock with all the attendant dysfunction that can entail.
While I think that's sad, it is the parent's choice, and while I don't agree with it, I do respect it. I do however wish they'd take the time to prepare their chidlren for a secular world.Quote
its just not how you or i would choose to do things. from what i can tell, there children are happy, well cared for, well adjusted, polite, and well behaved.
From experience, they are not particuarly well-behaved. The production crew does a lot of serious editing to give that impression. FWIW, I think it's more a case of the number of kids exceeding the parents C3 capability though. Anytime I pulled Mr. Duggar aside to warn him about his kids getting too close to a prop or active taxiway or landing area, he was right on top of it.

ryoderI was wondering when this topic would come up, but just in case others have missed the recent news: http://defamer.gawker.com/the-web-has-known-about-josh-duggar-for-years-when-did-1706258269
This was written before the Duggar story broke, but very pertinent.
"I thought, "Oh my gosh, I'm that chewed up piece of gum, nobody re-chews a piece of gum. You throw it away." And that's how easy it is to feel like you no longer have worth, you no longer have value. Why would it even be worth screaming out? Why would it even make a difference if you are rescued? Your life still has no value."
