These Tea Party folks seem to most liberals -- well, to most of us who live in the "reality community," or, as I like to call it, "reality" --- like crazy fuckers.

As a recent New York Times article reports, this hodgepodge of people and groups spout frankly paranoid beliefs as received wisdom, e.g. the Federal Reserve is our enemy and should be abolished; citizens should stock up on ammo, gold; and survival food in anticipation of an impending Civil War; states should "nullify" federal laws and even secede; medical records are being shipped to federal bureaucrats; the army is seeking "Internment/Resettlement" specialists; and Obama is trying to create crises in order to destroy the economy, convert Interpol into his personal police force and create a New World Order.

Conspiracy theories involving shadowy elites like the Trilateral Commission and the Council on Foreign Relations have resurfaced. Self-defense and armed resistance are frequently called for. Racist stereotypes, innuendo and hostility run rampant. The Constitution is its sacred text and Glenn Beck its most beloved prophet. They don't usually wear aluminum hats but perhaps they should.

I hate these folks but I also understand them. And, well, uh, I also empathize with them. They share the same psychology as the paranoid patients I treat every day. The only difference is that the paranoid beliefs of the Tea Party movement are political while those in my consulting room are of a more personal nature. The causes and dynamics, however, are the same. And so just as I have empathy for my patients, I have come to have empathy for the Tea Partiers, even as I despise their influence and work hard to defeat their ideology. It's crucial that the Left does likewise because if we don't understand the ways that decent, god-fearing, and victimized people can come to espouse such a dangerous ideology, we won't be able to fight them effectively.

Care to highlight anything that came remotely close to a "fact" in that?

not like you'd respond to the contend of the post anyway. You end up deflecting to another issue or ignoring direct questions. Likely because you don't have answers you claim to have.

I think it will be a lot easier to just state that every person of every race is racist.

There are racists from both sides, the difference is in most cases people don't acknowledge blacks hating on whites as racism.

Because of the way the world has in general been run by the whites (People, don't try to make that sound any worse than what it is), the effects of racism has been harder felt by non-whites.

But it is pretty stupid when a black person can call a white any racist term and it's just a laugh but when the roles are reversed then it's different. A black calling a white a 'lighty' or 'whitey' won't get any shit, but call a black a 'darky' and it's racist.

I understand what dreamdancer is trying to get through in many parts, but also think he is digging too deep looking for anything that could be considered racist and then saying that is racist.

And most of it is large scale discrimination which slips under most peoples radar, which is essentially 'racist', but not in the way many interperate the word.

Though I think things are more just bad politics than racism.

For example, a common argument which is part factual is that black people are the source of most crime. This is true sadly, that's just the way it is (especially here where 95%+ of prison inmates are black).

The reason for this is because they are the ones who are the poorest and needing to sell drugs or rob to survive (you'd all do it if it was your life or crime).

BUT...

Putting more effort into erradicating poverty would solve a lot. And many said the reason why there isn't more government spending or help going into the poor is because of racism. Now this is totally untrue, here in South Africa we have a black government who was voted into power by the poor, because of their false promises, but they still are hardly doing anything for the poor blacks and would rather focus on getting more money for their luxury cars, so as I said... Politics.

Don't you need to make a post that actually contains something of value, first, in order to refute it?

meso, you're doing well but remember the thread title is 'white racial resentment'. all the posters need do here is acknowledge that it is a real factor in the tea party movement. i'm the only one who's been accused of racism or being racist in this thread.

(but if i were to call rushmc the same he'd hit the panic buttons for sure - the moral indignity would be awesome to behold :)

Regardless of who is right and wrong I think you all know no one is going to back down or change their mind sets. It's just going to be a back and forth of "you are", "no you are", "no you!"

I'll get the popcorn so long
