metalslug 36 #233 February 18, 2010 QuoteThe most qualified person should be given the job regardless of their race. Our (South African) company's experience of affirmative action, which is still a new and fashionable thing here, has seen the term "most qualified" take an interesting spin; When interviewing potential candidates for a skilled position, many black applicants submit outstanding resume's, in some cases better than their white counterparts. What is disappointing, however, is that the expected practical evidence of these credentials is seldom present during the interview. When candidates are asked random 'spot' questions regarding certifications, skills and knowledge as claimed in their resume's, they very often answer incorrectly or simply don't understand the questions. Our conclusions from this is that the candidate has either submitted a fraudulent resume, or obtained the qualifications illicitly, or has a poor memory of skills learned, neither of which make them the best candidate for the position, even if the paperwork presents itself as "most qualified". metalslug 36 #237 February 18, 2010 Are you being deliberately obtuse ? ...or did you not understand my previous post ? Most candidates of color were inadequate compared to their claimed qualifications and experience, as submitted in their resumes. Half of these interviews were conducted by a black manager, a good colleague of mine, and yielded the same trend. I deliberately withheld that fact in my previous post just to see how long it would take you to jump to the conclusion that a "white vs black" interview is automatically biased. CanuckInUSA 0 #241 February 18, 2010 Quoteso we have a white person giving random spot questions to black employees and finding them (surprise, surprise) inadequate compared to white employees? You are so full of crap it is amazing. I work in Information Technology. When I am interviewed for a job I am grilled on technical questions. Often they are difficult questions since IT covers such a broad range and the interviews can be stressful. With your mindset if I was a person of color this would be a clear case of racism since the interviewers were asking me tough questions. But to anyone with half a brain and an understanding in IT, this is normal. They want to make sure the people they might hire can actually do the job. BTW in my last interview I was grilled by three people. A caucasian, a Chinese guy and an East Indian guy. It just goes to show that people of color can get jobs (in regards to the people interviewing me) when they have the skills. But when you do not have the skills, someone more qualified gets hired ahead of you. Look at me I was a white guy and I did not get this job, why? Because someone else was more qualified than I was. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

BTW in my last interview I was grilled by three people. A caucasian, a Chinese guy and an East Indian guy. And those are the dominant ethnic players in the IT world. Not because IT is full of racists (or sexists - it's been > 3 years since we've even seen a resume from a woman) - our job is made harder if we hire the more marginal candidate. Our job is easier when we hire the better one. We have every motivation to hire for quality. Dreamdancer - when someone claims to have a certification in a given technology and they can't answer basic questions about it, that's evidence that the candidate is bullshitting us. Quite common to put technologies on the resume that don't belong, but it fails badly when the interviewer calls them on it.
rehmwa 2 #244 February 18, 2010 QuoteA caucasian, a Chinese guy and an East Indian guy.
