VTmotoMike08 0 #1 January 22, 2010 Interesting article- http://europe.theoildrum.com/node/6132#more So basically, obesity rates are actually starting to decline, although not because people are making better choices. Its because they have bought all the fast food that they can stuff into their face, ran out of money to do so with (recession, etc), and are now forced to actually consume less. Sickening. Just to be clear, that's simply the hypothesis (or rather, vague notion) of the author, and is not documented or supported in anyway. I'd look somewhere else for the explanation (if the obesity rates have actually peaked).Do you want to have an ideagasm?
SpeedRacer 1 #3 January 22, 2010 Hmmm. So when we are running out of oil, can we start harvesting human blubber the way we used to do with whales? Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------

kelpdiver 2 #5 January 22, 2010 I don't see it indicating anywhere that the rate is declining, just that it is at a plateau. There will always be a certain percentage of Americans that are athletes, though the BMI rating may inaccurately label some of them as obese. And some just have a lovely metabolic rate. I see no evidence to support the notion that poor people can't afford McDonald's anymore. The poor in this country are much better off than the typical poor in the world. And quality of food isn't the same as calorie count. Two effects of the economy that will hit a large number of Americans, could show up. 1) people are eating out less to save money. Obvious gain here as restaurant dinners can have up to 2000 Cals (or more if you go to Claimjumper) 2) the un and underemployed have time to exercise. A lot of would be athletes are desk bound at work and this is the time to recover.
