And how do you explain his next post with the "uppity" comment?

Even if the interpretation you describe was true, which may be plausible, does that enable a "pass" on invoking an ad hominem? Are ad hominems okay if one agrees with the poster?

If you consider "uppity" to be a personal attack, then you really do need to lighten up a bit, and quit taking things so seriously. I've got a whole collection of personal attacks made against me that make "uppity" pale in comparison. Someone called me an "asshole" today in another forum, and I didn't even give it a second thought.

I have no gripe with you, nerdgirl. You misinterpreted the intention of my "umbrella license" comment, and now you're raving-on and making a mountain out of a molehill.

Why don't you just drop it, quit being so sensitive, and move along. That's what I've done.

Responding as if this were a legitimate question.

I think I see the problem... You can't tell serious bits from humor.

Since MOST people got the joke, maybe it was not the message sent?

Perhaps. That's one interpretation. Perhaps the serious bits were not well-differentiated from the non-serious ones? Perhaps the follow-up with an ad hominem didn't help the case for something being intended as humorous?

Another viable interpretation is that I try to treat everyone with respect. I'll respond to something in a serious way initially rather than a sarcastic or mocking way.
Which one enables more effective, if sometimes tedious, communication?

For example, the Atlanta Police Officers with whom I've spoken attribute the decline in crime to something very different - to rain. Yes, rain. We've has a very rainy year, especially compared to previous ones. They assert that criminals don't like to come out in the rain.

Interesting. It was exactly the opposite in Russia, as a report was released in 2004 - more businesses are robbed when it's raining. Less traffic, less cops on streets, cameras get foggy, and traffic cops at city exits* have much less incentive to get out to stop and question one.

*in Russia every city has a traffic police post on every road which goes in/out, and they frequently stop incoming/outgoing cars, question drivers and perform trunk searches. It is right on the road, not like a weight station, so those guys have to work outsize of their cozy building, and obviously have much less incentive doing so when its raining.
