Playing politics with war

Sorry if the language was too subtle for you to decode, but I think the vast majority of people would be able to figure that out.

You're talking in circles.

First, a comment about open ended wars getting people re-elected.

"I like that idea a shit load better than the folks that want to keep their wars open ended for the purposes of getting re-elected and passing any remaining problems on to the next guy."

I questioned that statement and you said it worked for GWB. Then you said something about the beauty of two terms and you're out.

"That's the beauty of the Presidency; two terms, you're out and it's the next guy's problem. Which is what I said in my first response. "

That's not what you said in your first response. Your first response was about war getting people re-elected. This response was about the beauty of two terms.

Why don't you figure out what you want to argue before preaching about what most people can follow.

It was one year into the war, his approval rating was well over 50%, and he won the absolute majority in the election.

It was 3 years into the war in Afghanistan.

Ok. His approval rating was well over 50% and he won the absolute majority. If he were running in 2008, with an open ended war, do you think he would've been re-elected? Do you think that the open ended war helped his approval or hurt it?

I don't think so. I think you're being obtuse. Nobody else that has responded in this thread appears to have been confused in the slightest.

No, I don't think he would have stood a chance of reelection.

By 2008, it was clear that we were engaged in two open ended wars. They did not help his approval, at least among moderates, which is the group that decides the elections.

However, as America learned in '68, tossing the Dem for a Republican is unlikely to end the war any time soon.

Really? Because Nixon acted almost immediately after office, with the first of the US troop withdrawals happening in June. The 540,000 US troops were reduced by 25,000. Another 60,000 left by December. Most wer out by 72, giving him the biggest election margin in memory.
