winsor 236 #1 November 27, 2009 Since it is a fact that only a heretic would dare deny that CO2 is going to turn this fair planet into just one more sterile orb, no amount of hysteria is sufficient to address the issue. I say we should put our money where our mouth is. The US of A should IMMEDIATELY ban the importation of ANY materials subject to combustion and subsequent release of CO2. Since we use something like 21 million, and produce only 4.7 million, barrels of oil a day, this should do more to reduce our carbon footprint than any recommendation I have yet heard. Hybrid cars? There won't be enough surplus petroleum to fire up a moped! I think it's a great idea, and one whose time has come. We won't even have to pass any legislation to accomplish this anyway - the moment one of our T-bill auctions fails to find enough buyers and the dollar reverts to its inherent value (zero), we will go on just such an energy diet. Sure, some of us are going to have to make some minor sacrifices, but such luxuries as having food to eat are greatly overrated. Now, if only we can get Algore to sign on, this will be a slam dunk.! Enjoy yourself - it's later than you think. BSBD, Winsor

If you want to have more effect, ban any use of domestic oil. Prices will skyrocket and market forces will result in the increased use of non-oil transportation fuels (natural gas, biogas, biofuels, pure electric, PHEV etc.) Then when the rest of the world starts running out of oil to run their cars (and more importantly their military) we'll have a whole nation of oil to use to defend ourselves - AND we will lead the world in alternative energy transportation products, which we will be able to sell for top dollar to the Chinese, the Russians, the Venezuelans and to everyone else who has remained dependent on foreign oil. Would be nice to have the shoe on the other foot for once. Of course, that will never happen; Americans will never deign to be inconvenienced by expensive gas.
