Kind of surprised you don't see it that way. Usually the fiscal conservatives equate just about any money going from the people to the government to pay for anything as a form tax. Can't say I necessarily disagree either.

Although, some "creative" politicians like to use phrases such as "user fees" and "revenue enhancements" and thereby attempt to hide behind the growing collection of taxes.

On the flip side, I also am not opposed to certain services being mostly paid for by the people that most directly benefit from them.

Either way, you have to pay for stuff.

In the case of health care, you can try to do it "fairly" by making everyone foot a piece of the bill up front, or you can try to hide it by making the services in the ER just cost more. Of course, that doesn't show up on a tax bill, but we all actually do end up paying for it one way or another.

I must have missed the revision in the bill where everyone has to pay and nobody gets any assistance - can you point it out for me?

Sure. It's right after to the part that says "buy a $15,000 policy or go to jail." It should be very easy to find.

Actually, that part is in section 7201 of the income tax code.

Quote

Sec. 7201. Attempt to evade or defeat tax

Any person who willfully attempts in any manner to evade or
defeat any tax imposed by this title or the payment thereof shall,
in addition to other penalties provided by law, be guilty of a
felony and, upon conviction thereof, shall be fined not more than
$100,000 ($500,000 in the case of a corporation), or imprisoned not
more than 5 years, or both, together with the costs of prosecution.

Title III, subtitle C of the bill, labeled "Individual Affordability Credit" seems to put the lie to Paul's assertion, as well.

Looks like Mark was right.

In that unlikely event, he owes beer.

Taxes? Who said anything about taxes? There's not a single dime worth of new taxes for anyone under $250k, right? This must just be a required government fine....:S
