A Day Without Personal Attacks

Recommended Posts

Says the fellow who sent me a subtle death threat by private message less than 24 hours ago.

I've found that even the most neutral and well-meaning comments on this forum draw venom from all kinds who don't agree with others' posts. And not to my credit, I've let that make me a rather cynical poster here as of late.

Forgive me for saying this, but I don't think you're exactly one to lead by example. Though it's never too late to start.

I'm game. :D

so I think confining us in some straightjacket in any way

wow

And when you post the entire passage it become less, "wow".

As innovators, we Americans push the envelope in all ways to see where it will take us, so I think confining us in some straightjacket in any way is not how we're wired.

Actually I think it makes it worse. Certainly Americans are just as capable as any other nationality of having a discussion with out resorting to insults. In fact avoiding insults altogether during discussions is far more conducive to innovation then the opposite.

I stand by my wow.

They don't have to be overt insults. Look at the automakers challenging each other, athletes challenging each other; these are what fuels innovation. Funny to hear conservatives hellbent on a free market, free speech now wanting controls; are we switching sides here?

There's a difference between a PA and disagreeing with someone, even vehemently.

And sometimes when Americans push the envelope, we find we've busted it right open. Kind of like all the cheap credit and cheap fattening foods lately.

What's wrong with, as a though exercise, trying to get your ideas across without calling people stupid and the like?

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

And that kind of thing is not cool. PAs are PAs in PMs also.

Obviously we live in two different worlds.

The diff is that I define mine in detail, you just, "wow" yours, as if you're at a deficit as for what to say.

Not even close. The difference is in your world insults are beneficial. In mine they're detrimental.

Yeah, like telling someone he seems happy that 12 soldiers are dead. :S

But in the spirit of this thread, I won't call you a hypocrite.

Doesn't that sound like a great idea?

How about it?

Are you people willing to abide by this?

Can we make it just one day?

A few days?

A week?

I doubt it, but I am going to lead by example.

Let's also include veiled statements that are actually directed at provoking others.

I talk substance, you talk rhetoric; that's the stark diffrence.

Most make inferences, but it's fun to watch those who issue veiled PA's all of the sudden get offended. Truth is, they're stuck in the argument, so they look for spelling errors, veiled PA's, etc. No one PA's you, as you don't argue that way. Most people who get PA'd via veiled insults are teh ones who also issue the same.

Some peolpe argue on a strict level that has no PA's, some use veiled PA's and others gross PA's, but the important thing is that we get to some substance in the issue.

Taking such a horrific event (within minutes of the event unfolding I might add) and using it in such a way to push a political agenda while also utilizing sarcasm... I calls it like I sees it my friend.

Sounds good to me. There isn't that many who haven't put across some form of PA in their replies - Marg and Wendy spring to mind, but it's a good point. Surprisingly there are already bitchy comments to this post (is this a subtle PA??), and perhaps your reasonable request is impossible through the fact that many people get off on doing their best to concuct non-direct PA's.

Ultimately we might desire for face to face arguments; not so violence can solve the issue, but more for the element of mutual respect that you'll never be able to achieve on an internet forum. I've no doubt that certain people may have second thoughts on how they voice their counter arguments towards me in real life, compared to how they do so on here, but I don't really mind one way or the other.

I've always provided individuals the opportunity to address the issues we so rudely disagree with to my face.

Not a single one was ever willing to do so.

Speaks volumes.

I call it cowardice in my book. Although, despite always expecting this to be the case, I've often been disappointed by how many take the cowards road.

The joy of the internet, eh?

'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.'

Um, yeah, ok - seeing as how you throw around accusations of being a bush supporter at those who don't agree with you like beads for a mardi gras float, I think I'm going to take this one with a LARGE grain of salt.
