A Day Without Personal Attacks

Recommended Posts

I'm not real big on personal attacks. But the biggest problem I see with this is that there are as many definitions of personal attack as there are people participating in the thread.

Some people consider nearly any disagreement with something they hold dear to be a personal attack. Others only consider physical attacks on their bodies to be personal attacks. Obviously there's a whole lot of room between those two.

So to go along with a day without personal attacks, let's have a day with believing the best of others' intentions. Don't infer a personal attack if you have to work at it.

Note: the "you" in my statement is rhetorical, there because English doesn't really have a good impersonal pronoun. "One" sounds so foo-foo.

Agreed.

Lately I have lost quite a few people I know in the prime of their lives and this is really affecting me.

Also my friend Steve's wife Leslie has only two weeks to live at the most, they have four children.

This will not be a happy occasion except that she will suffer no longer.

Life is far too short to be so negative,

Hey, I use "one" as a non-specific pronoun all the time ... is that a personal attack on me? :o

Doesn't that sound like a great idea?

How about it?

Are you people willing to abide by this?

Can we make it just one day?

A few days?

A week?

I doubt it, but I am going to lead by example.

Let's also include veiled statements that are actually directed at provoking others.

Sounds like a wonderful idea to me. I am a major flame magnet.

Let the first person prove me correct that I believe there are a few who are incapable.

I think you just proved yourself correct.

I thought you wanted to include veiled statements meant to rile people up. The last nine words of your sentence were completely unneeded, and clearly intended to rile up people with whom you often disagree.

Why not set the example?

We're just jealous because you're a babe magnet. ;)

Maybe back in the day. Now, not so much but, thanks.

Sure, but you know this thread will haunt you for the rest of your DZ.COM days, right?

I wouldn't exactly consider setting standards for oneself as well as others to be a haunting. Personally I respect warped for going out on a ledge and taking this position as it takes a certain amount of courage and I hope others follow suit.

Great idea. I do think the last line of your challenge is the toughest one though because you never really can know what's going to set somebody else off. And let's face facts here, if anybody wants to be a jerk they can take even the most innocent of comments and turn them into a flame fest.

This would be a very, very different thread in Bonfire :P. It would immediately descend into people trying out their most creative PA's....

Good thing that'll never happen here:S

My cinical side wonders what's behind this from warped, even tho nothing probably is. Could it that since his political party is down, he wants a hug or to not derride the mess his party left? Could be. But to have discourse that is so vanilla ice cream w/o even constructively poking someone to bring some more data and evidence to the table would be like doing solo RW dives with no turns, no tracking, just jump and pull at 3k, land w/o a swoop.

As innovators, we Americans push the envelope in all ways to see where it will take us, so I think confining us in some straightjacket in any way is not how we're wired. I know I've been forced to research various data from posters here and it's made me far more intelligent, many of these issues and data were never even touched or not deeply at university, but here they have. So to limit conversation so as to be so delicate as not even come close to hurting someone's feelings and apologetically disagree at most is not how this board is wired. I think this forum is quite moderated and keeps people well within bounds.
