Lieberman: I'll Support GOP Filibuster of Public Option

Tuesday, October 27, 2009 1:25 PM

Sen. Joe Lieberman says he will back a GOP filibuster of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s health care reform bill because of its inclusion of a “public option” — a devastating blow to the Obama administration’s hopes of unified Democratic support for a healthcare bill with a government-run insurance program

Lieberman, an independent who caucuses with Democrats and is positioning himself as a fiscal hawk on the issue, told Politico that he opposes any healthcare bill that includes the public option — even if it includes a provision allowing states to opt out of the program, as Reid’s has said the Senate bill will.

"We're trying to do too much at once," Lieberman told Politco. “To put this government-created insurance company on top of everything else is just asking for trouble for the taxpayers, for the premium payers and for the national debt. I don’t think we need it now."

Lieberman added that he’d vote against a public option plan “even with an opt-out because it still creates a whole new government entitlement program for which taxpayers will be on the line."

His comments confirms that Reid is short of the 60 votes needed to advance the bill out of the Senate. Several other moderate Democrats expressed skepticism at the proposal as well, but most of the wavering Democratic senators did not go as far as Lieberman Tuesday, saying they were waiting to see the details.

Inclusion of a government insurance plan in Senate health care legislation is posing problems for moderate senators whose votes are critical to passing the bill. Reverberations could be felt across the Capitol, where House Democratic leaders are finalizing a bill with a government plan, the Associated Press reported.

Meanwhile, Maine Republican Susan Collins, who had earlier indicated interest in trying to pass a bipartisan bill this year, issued a statement underscoring her opposition to "a taxpayer-subsidized, government-run health insurance company."

Lieberman said Tuesday in a telephone interview with The Associated Press that he's worried a public option would be costly to taxpayers and drive up insurance premiums. An independent who caucuses with Democrats, Lieberman is among a group of about a dozen moderate senators whose support Reid will need as Senate critical health care votes near.

Lieberman said he's open to the possibility of supporting a plan set up and run by the states.

It's not clear that Reid, D-Nev., has the 60 votes needed for the controversial government insurance plan to prevail on the Senate floor. If it fails, that could affect the thinking of House members, particularly moderate Democrats.

"There are some members of the House, obviously, who are very concerned about what the Senate does ... because they want to vote for something that can pass, that can be enacted," said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md.

"On the other hand there are a whole lot of people in the House, the great majority of the Democrats in the House, who want to see a health reform bill pass in the fashion that we believe is justified ... and I think an overwhelming majority of Democrats are in favor of the public option," Hoyer added.

Lawmakers must meld the House and Senate versions of the health care bills.

House Democratic leaders have been debating the shape the government insurance plan will take in their bill, with Speaker Nancy Pelosi pushing for a strong version that would tie payment rates to providers to rates paid by Medicare _ likely resulting in cheaper costs for patients but lower payments to hospitals and doctors, something that troubles moderates.

Pelosi doesn't appear to have the votes for that plan. Hoyer said that switching the design to allow the Health and Human Services secretary to negotiate payment rates with providers _ the approach Reid is taking _ gets more support for a public option, which Hoyer said currently commands between 200 and 218 votes. A simple majority in the House is 218.

Reid's plan would allow individual states to opt out of the public insurance plan. In the wake of his announcement Monday the focus of the health overhaul debate shifted to the handful of moderate senators whose support will be crucial to get him to 60.

Reid's decision amounted to a victory for liberal lawmakers who have pushed for a public insurance option they contend would create needed competition for private industry and provide affordable choices to consumers.

The reaction from moderate Democrats _ they fear a public plan could drive insurers out of business and take over the marketplace _ ranged from muted to skeptical. The one Republican who has so far lent her support to Democratic health overhaul proposals, Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine, said she was "deeply disappointed" by Reid's decision.

Snowe had supported allowing government insurance in individual states only if the private market wasn't providing sufficient choice and competition.

Among the moderates whose support is in question are Sens. Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas and Mary Landrieu of Louisiana.

Landrieu said in a statement that she's still "very skeptical" about a government plan run from Washington but would keep working with Reid to find a "principled compromise."

Nelson "is not committing how we will vote regarding any proposal Sen. Reid is advancing," said spokesman Jake Thompson.

Lincoln, who's up for re-election in 2010, said through a spokesman she intends to study the details and decide how to vote based on the impact on her home state.

Both the House and Senate are struggling to complete work by year's end on legislation extending coverage to millions who lack it, banning insurance industry practices such as denying coverage because of pre-existing medical conditions, and slowing the rise in medical costs nationally.

Associated Press writers David Espo, Andrew Miga and Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar contributed to this report.

You think Lieberman's a Democrat? That's a good one.

Just like Snow is a Republican, ya, I get your point, However, you may want to look at a few more news sites. Lieberman is far from being alone.

Also, in all fairness, I doubt the "option" is really dead at this time. Just delayed a bit for now

I think the Nazi's have won again. Anyone still stupid enough to think that during Bush's last 2 years when the senate was 49-49-2 that the Dems owned the Senate?

Liebernazi was and is pro-war and adamantly pulled for McCain in the 2008 election, as well as other pro-Nazi stances. When will the Dems wise up and kick that turd back to his party? Having him caucus as a Dem is like having a rival football team player sit in our huddle. This should work, the Dems took away a couple small Senate positions from Liebernazi after the Dems won in 2008, then apologized and said he wouldn't be such a dick, well he is, so the Dems have to oust that trash.

I know, he campaigned for McCain in 08. Hell, in 06 his own party then, the Dems wouldn't nominate him in the primary. So he ran as an indep and was elected by 2/3 vote from registered R's. When will the Dems wise up, strip him of all duties and send him to teh R's where he belongs?

Liebernazi is a total R, Snow is a moderate Republican; she wasn't all about a public option either, just more deep reform.

Independent Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman said Tuesday that he would support a Republican filibuster against the bill unless it's changed. Key Democratic moderates including Sens. Evan Bayh, D-Ind.; Ben Nelson, D-Neb.; and Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., also said they were uncertain how they'd vote, expressing deep reservations about the public plan.

And Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, the only Republican to have voted for any version of health care reform, reiterated Tuesday that she's "disappointed" in Reid's proposal and will not support the government option.

Helluva thing to call a Jew, there.

It surely was. I for one will give him the benefit of doubt. Only he knows how he meant the name or label.

So you want to bitch about debt while bitching that we might not increase that debt in the way you want to? When did you develop this allergy to standing on your own feet and making your own way?

You assume HC will run up the debt when in reality it will likely just bring equity to HC for people whether they choose the public option or not.

Furthermore, I bitch about the debt when it's wasted on the Iraq War, overmaxed military and other unneccessary BS. HC, according to all but the world, is a neccessity.

"Libernazi" hummmm given that he is jewish does this seem like a really good slap! Way to go Lucky. :P

Like that? I see a lot of American Jews want to proliferate the Iraq War or any warring with the ME, of course not them or theirs, but they feel an obligation to send other Americans off to that region to kill Arabs / Palestinians. SO the beauty here is that if the Dems can find the balls, tell Liebernazi to go with the HC flow or lose his committee positions NOW. I hoe they have teh balls to leverage that.

he may share some Democratic ideals, but he's not willing to work within the party, and the party should finally stop treating him as a senior member, one worthy of any subcommittee memberships. Time and again he has screwed them in party politics.

Is that the same "reality" that provided your aviation analogy?

And what's wrong with it, Airbus came from nowhere and has kicked the conglomeration known as Boeing/Douglas all to shit, as I posted. Yes, that's the same analogy. They're the #1 acft builder in the world last I checked.
