British Government Considers Mandating Plastic Pint Glasses

The home office commissioning a beer glass design can be as simple as them throwing an idea out for industry and product designers to consider.

How about making the mugs out of tempered glass, like car windows. Imagine the surprise when the drunken thug at the bar smashes the end of his glass on the bar in order to produce some razor sharp edges to slice someone's face up, only to have the glass crumble apart into a thousand small chunks. The victim-to-be can then laugh in his face, and the thug will depart in dejection with his tail between his legs.

Of course, then he'll return after retrieving the knife in his car, and the government will have to ban knives.

There are probably dozens of ways that the glasses can be made "safer". Once you move away from the hype/spin that is all they are proposing.

I see it as progress, and one thing that I have learn't over the past 3 years, is that when people actually take the time to read the SOURCE document it is often quite sensible, well laid out and in plain English. Perhaps I am biased as part of my job involves a technical advisory role on the revision/writing of certain EU directives. It is the consultants and scare mongers who extrapolate the law to line their pockets. A classic example of this is UK Health & Safety law - the H&S executive had to tell people to "apply common sense".
Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

FAIL!!!!!

No, you fucking fail.

The article says that the pub industry would not accept plans to blah blah blah. Nowhere does it say that any such plans actually exist, or that they are being considered by the government.

You wilfull gullibility is really disappointing.

He's right. The article did not say that the government is going to mandate plastic glasses - just that the British Beer and Pub Association doesn't want such a mandate.

Not really...

Yes, really. Really really.

Quote

the article DID state that the GOVT was looking at ways to prevent a rather small issue;

By looking at potential new glass designs, not by looking at banning the old design. Nowhere was that stated.

Okay, that does it. Government-mandated paper cups only! Anyone caught drinking their beer out of a glass in public will be arrested on the spot! We can't afford to just wait until something happens to arrest a violent person - then it's too late. We should take preemptive action. We must presume that ANYONE is capable of violence, and therefore treat everyone as a potential felonious attacker. Let's face it - we cannot be trusted with glasses. We must discard them in favor of paper cups. Do it for England. Do it for the Queen.

Prevention is better than having to deal with the after math. Ask any of the A&E (trauma/emergancy staff ) what a weekend is like and what they have to deal with. Did you look at the pictures or ever seen some one glassed John !, have you. Do you know what kind of scar that can leave and i don't mean just physical ?. you really need to see past your anti British prejudice Mate. it was plastic cups not paper and think you will find it was UK wide not just England:)
This Scot bows to no queen mate and that's really fucking insulting when you look at our heritage.

Are you joking me?

You post a misleading article with an unsupportable thread title, get called on it and your response is to shout 'FAIL!!!!'. Very grown up.

I explain to you, again, why you're wrong, and why your call of 'FAIL!!!!' is wrong and the only response you can muster is to act shocked at seeing a swear word (you're a grown up - deal with it) and whinge about the way I write my posts.

In short, anything to evade the fact that, like I said, you're wrong. And that's not at all juvenile, right?

Exactly! Thanks for echoing my own sentiments. I'm with you on this one, by gosh. Those in emergency rooms who see the gory results of glassings with glass glasses ought to be allowed to tell the rest of England what they should be allowed to drink out of. Paper cups would make it impossible for drunken thugs to hurt someone with their drinking utensils. It would put a quick end to this scourge of "glassings", and the government ought to mandate it. If they'll just man-up and do this simple thing for the greater good of England, then your emergency room glassing victims will be replaced by yobs with simple paper cuts - a vast improvement, I must say. I'm glad you're in agreement with me on this. You can do it for William Wallace too.

I wouldn't worry about JohnRich too much Billy.

He's just doing a fine job of living up to the ignorant stereotype that he is. I'm sure it isn't only the Brits who shake their heads at the vile, stupid and quite frankly patronising shit that spews from his pie hole.

In message #59 I had said; "Do it for the Queen."

In message #61 pincheck said; "This Scot bows to no queen mate and that's really fucking insulting when you look at our heritage."

So I offered him the alternative of William Wallace, as someone presumably who Scots admire when it comes to disliking loyalty to the Queen.

News from England:
Culture of violence: Gun crime goes up by 89% in a decade

Gun crime has almost doubled since Labour came to power as a culture of extreme gang violence has taken hold. The latest Government figures show that the total number of firearm offences in England and Wales has increased from 5,209 in 1998/99 to 9,865 last year - a rise of 89 per cent. In some parts of the country, the number of offences has increased more than five-fold. In eighteen police areas, gun crime at least doubled. The number of people injured or killed by guns has increased from 864 in 1998/99 to a provisional figure of 1,760 in 2008/09, an increase of 104 per cent...

Comparison:
England - 89% increase in 10 years, while most gun ownership was banned.
U.S. - 428% drop in gun crime, while guns remained legal.

And with that, do you still believe that gun ownership causes gun crime?
Do you still believe that banning guns is an effective crime fighting measure?
Thanks for helping me make my point.

Furthermore, if you want to ignore an 89% increase in gun crime in England, under the idea that since America is worse, it's therefore nothing important to worry about, then you are making a really bad mistake. An 89% increase is quite significant, and should be taken seriously, regardless of what may be happening somewhere else in the world.

How did we get from beer glasses to gun crime?

A beer glass is no match for a .45.
