I saw the trailer on TV. From all indications, it appears to be the greatest display of special effects ever incorporated in a movie. Makes "The Day After" seem like a walk in the park.

my first thought was that there would be a theatre full of Texans cheering at California falling into the ocean. Then the trailer went on to showcase global devastation.

which politically correct message is this movie going to carry? Shouldn't this be a poll??

More accurately, Los Angeles. Los Angeles is destroyed in nearly every disaster movie out there. Even people who live there love to see it.

That's an interesting thought - I remember when the trailers for Independence Day showed the White House being destroyed and people cheered....

We're probably far enough away from 9/11 now that it would probably get a cheer again (in fact, I remember the 2012 trailer tossing an aircraft carrier on the White House..), but it makes you wonder - if an opposing force REALLY blew up the White House or LA, would people be this happy about it?

I know it's fiction, but I just find this difference in reaction between real life and movies really fascinating.

If Obama was in the White House when it gets blown up, Glenn Beck and the boys at FOX would be dancing in the streets.:P

Well, there'd have to be a lot of people that were next in line in there with them.

#2 - Biden (Worse than Obama?)
#3 - Pelosi (Oh hell no...)
#4 - Byrd (Seriously? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IindJIwH0_o)
#5 - Clinton (She'd finally be pres...)
#6 - Geithner (I can't imaging how much $ he'd give away as pres.)
#7 - Gates (eh, ok.)
#8 - Holder (there's a scary thought)

Edit: sp.

I think this movie will be a good show. The CG looks fun.... but I think it will spark some of the fear mongering and uncertainty that we say Dec 31, 1999.

Anytime someone says "The end is near!", you will have those cheering the destruction and those nay-saying the "prophet."

And then you have the masses in the middle..... those that will still plan for college graduation in 2014 or watching lil susie (who is now 5yo) get married.... To them, I think this will be entertainment. But, they're not very vocal, are they? They just work to get to the next day and then party on the weekend. Where's the story in that?

I think the press will focus more on the "story" that this movie might generate. Those that ABSOLUTE that the Mayans had it right v. those that LOUDLY dismiss anyone that believe such superstition.

And that then pulls us back to the "prepared" thread.... how many people in Cali have a plane just waiting on the tarmac just for them... except for those that live at 'snore or perris B|B|

Seriously? There are people who'd take that seriously?

I just want to see it because the CG looks really entertaining.

Wasn't 2012 just sort of a clerical point in the Mayan calendar, where they would restart it at zero? Kind of their equivalent of leap year?

As I understand it, it was just the end of the calendar that they made. Kind of like the calendar on my wall ends at December 31, 2009.

They took their calendar out quite a ways. And did so quite accurately AFAIK. Did they know that the end of their calculations coincided with the passage of the center of the galaxy behind the sun? Or is it just a funky coincidence?

I don't know.

But they couldn't predict the end of their own civilization -Mainly due to a 20 year drought that came along with the Midevial warming trend (I think).

So I don't put a whole lot of time worrying about the end of the world.

more akin to own 2000, or (for unix geeks - 2038). They made their calendar to work for a long time into the future (relative to the two examples I give, much further out) and that end time has finally arrived, 700 or 800 years after the empire died out.
