I'm a conservative but I wasn't celebrating the final vote. The games are fun to watch and provide an abundance of business for local community, but they don't actually do shit for my life. Sorry, should have said "it's odd to see conservatives celebrating the loss of the Olympics." Let's hope that other more rational conservatives start distancing themselves from these idiots. nerdgirl 0 #107 October 5, 2009 QuoteWow. What a bunch of navel gazing. -The rest of the world doesn't see anything unusual about the Prez cheerleading for an American city. -The rest of the world does not see Chicago as one of the worlds more corrupt places, nor does it have a crime rate that even remotely compares with places like Rio. For example the homicide rate last year was 33/100 000 down from 39/ source versus Chicago at 18/100 000 up from 15.6 source. Great post - both data and commentary. I appreciate the view from the outside looking in on our domestic politics. /Marg Act as if everything you do matters, while laughing at yourself for thinking anything you do matters. wmw999 2,587 #108 October 5, 2009 BTW, here's my brother's viewpoint (the one who's lived in both places for extended periods).QuoteMy take: Corruption - Rio has much more petty corruption, it is much more pervasive. Chicago is the big leagues - far fewer cases but FAR more money, and they are truly pros. Getting stuff done in Chicago would require far more greasing, but ... If you pay, it WILL get done and get done right. Just cost a lot. In Rio it's much less money but far more hands ... and no guarantee that it will make a difference. And most importantly, the common man does not see any evidence of corruption in Chicago, it is institutionalized. In Rio, everyone has a decent chance of being hit with it. Violence - hands down, more of a risk in Rio. Big and small. It will be a big risk for the Olympians and the spectators. I really think Chicago could control it for an Olympics, I have serious doubts Rio will be able to. All that said, I am THRILLED Rio got it. It will make much more of a difference for Rio, Brazil, and Latin America. And IF it is pulled off well, serious long term benefits. A chance to show they are ready to move up with the big boys.
