Which City Will Win the Olympic Games in 2016

Recommended Posts

I heard on the radio (NPR) that Brazil was making the case that it was high time an Olympics was hosted in South America. So now it looks like they've got their chance. Why not just congratulate them ?

I'd just be concerned about Rio's notorious crime rate. IIRC, several members of the US Parachute Team were relieved of their wallets at the beach back in the day when a World Championship was hosted in Rio.

I personally believe he diminished the office by going to Copenhagen.

Why?

He made a pitch, but ultimately, unless Rio's bid was not deemed credible for success, it was going to South America. If he hadn't gone, people would bitch and moan that he didn't use his international star power to further it.

As for following the examples of the past, SLC was known for bribery. Were you proposing Chicago stick to its established methods, or did you mean something else?

In case you did not notice that around the world Chicago is viewed as the most corrupt city in the western world and possibly the entire world.

as much as i dislike chicago, i find it hard to believe its the most corrupt, or even viewed as the most currupt city in the western or entire world. i have no doubt that it would be seeded very highly in the us city corruption playoffs, but i'm sure there are plenty of cities around the world that would dominate chicago.

btw, why would you spend 44 years there?

Not responding to any specific post, but... I think the USA has hosted enough Olympics (more than any other country in the world), and think that it's time to have it where it hasn't been held. Rio just might put on a great show for all we know.

My entire family is here.

I also have strong ties to several things here.

Remember that my family was once "sort of" powerful here. (a little over 50 years)

It made up for the fact that this place has so many rules that most people have to put up with.

When I was a little boy I could walk down Lake St. in Melrose Park with a $10 in my hand and not a sould would bother me.

Adults would address me as "Mister" my Nono was a very respected man. (and an honest man)

Uncle Tony was a hell of a guy.

Very true Billy and even more reason that politicians and media moguls should have stayed out of it.

I'm already calling dibs on who gets to light the Olympic flame there, if he's still alive then.

That's the beauty of it. Either way, it offers an opportunity to bitch about Obama. It's a great example of the Bart Simpson paradox, damned if you do, damned if you don't.

How about kicking a flaming soccer ball from the field to the cauldron? As long as he doesn't try to head it in, he should be okay. :D

Who wants to get mugged in a crappy place like Chicago? I wanna get mugged in a crappy place like Rio. Can you think of a better way to help the poor?

What I am finding much more interesting is the "news" casters from places like MSNBC and Chicagol's local talking heads.

The Youtuve videos of these people makes you believe they are nuts.
Statements (before) like with Obama going it is in the bag, he will make all the difference, the reaction of the IOC panel and how they treated him like a "rock star" and they even called him something like a "rock star" makes you think he has made the difference!:D

Then, the Youtube vid of the Chicago reporters face and comments when Chicago went down round one. He was utterly stunned and shocked:D:D

All will be forgiven and forgotten by tomorrow. Small thing is the context of all that is going on today.

Still, it is funny to watch:D

I wanted to chime in on this thread as well:

After Chicago was eliminated I immediately went with Rio - because of some of the reasons people mentioned here and some additional reasons.

1) the South America thing. I don't think it's actually the biggest reason, but a good one.

2) The World Cup there in 2014 will give them a feeling of how Brazil handles a big event, and what they need to fix in time for 2016. Also, a lot of infrastructure needed will get built for the World Cup so that's a lot less uncertainty in terms of facilities.

3) I'm not sure why Chicago didn't make it but maybe it's displeasure of the IOC with the US for previous games (1996, 2002), but I think that as soon as Chicago was out, I was sure Rio would win because of TV....

The biggest reason I thought Chicago would win is not because of which city was most capable of showcasing the best games (I believe all 4 probably would have done a great job). I thought Chicago would win because from what I understand, the biggest revenue maker is TV rights for the IOC, and the biggest TV contract is one usually paid out by an American TV network. NBC has the rights now, and I think they expire sometime soon - so the bidding would likely be between NBC and ESPN/ABC (and maybe the others, I don't know).

Given that it seems like Olympic apathy is growing in the US, and that from what I recall hearing, the TV ratings for Beijing were not that good (all from memory, so i could be completely off). I'd think the IOC would want to court favor with the networks that pay the big bucks and give the Olympics to an American city to stir interest again.

Once Chicago was out, I felt Rio would get it because they could still show the Olympics live here at a decent hour. I'm sure the tape-delay from Beijing (with results being available instantly online) did not help NBC last year.

My 2 cents.

Also, i started this message like 3 hrs ago and then actually had to do work, so i'm sure by now someone has covered these same points.

>The president should not have involved himself, it seemed to be in
>very poor taste to have a sitting US President plead Chicago's case.

If he hadn't your post would have read "the president should have involved himself; it shows how uncaring he is that he couldn't even be bothered to try to help out the US after his term is over."

>Does that make you angry or proud of Obamacles?

Neither. But I am certain that no matter what happens, you will take it as further reason to hate him.

What's wrong with the President playing cheerleader for the US in an attempt to attract a sporting event with economic implications?

Personally, I don't see an unsuccessful effort as a negative for him. Better to try and fail than not try at all, especially when opponents are drooling for an opportunity to bash you over any failure.
