The Cost of America's Gun Addiction

don't you just love guns...

"Killing shocks UC Irvine campus" ran the headline in the Los Angeles Times recently after a man allegedly shot his ex-wife to death.

The article, which reported the slaying, focused at least as much on the shock in the community that such a thing could happen in a place like Irvine, California.

I felt sad, of course, when I read it. I felt a twinge of despair. Shock, however? Not the least bit. Of course it happened.

Every year, 12,000 people are shot to death in the US - accounting for more than two out of every three killings. That's an average of 33 people daily.

An additional 240 people get shot and injured every day, and more than 65 million Americans own a total of 283m firearms. Where, exactly, do we expect the 12,000 homicides to happen? Do we really think that the places with gangs and high crime rates are the only places where people are going to use their guns?

The widespread numbness to the especially high murder rates in our poor inner-city neighbourhoods is egregious enough. But that's matched by the widespread denial that the epidemic of gun violence is playing out every day in every kind of neighbourhood across America.

I agree totally ... we need a “SAFE ZONE” … a place with ABSLOUTE ZERO TOLLERANCE for weapons of ANY kind ... where the POLICE have ABSLOUTE POWER of SEARCH & SESIURE ... I know I would feel a lot SAFER then.

Actually we do have such a place ... it's called PRISION and it's sure a lot SAFER then the "poor inner-city neighborhoods".

Funny thing is ... the cost of these PRISIONS is staggering "Florida spent $2.719 billion in fiscal year 2007 on corrections" ... the murder/assault rate is astronomical ... but if you really think they would be better off please feel free to use my tax dollars to send these people there .. cause I sure want them to feel SAFE ... that includes all the people that are "concerned" about my right to keep and bear arms ... I sure want them to feel SAFE too[:/]

In case you forgot what it says ...
Second Amendment to the United States Constitution

When are people going to get it ... it's the persons state-of-mind and lack of respect for human life that's the problem !

PRISION is an perfect example of that panacea ... ABSLOUTE ZERO TOLLERANCE for weapons of ANY KIND ... would you feel safer in a place like that ?

But don't you think the problem is a whole lot deeper than America's so called addiction to guns!

Seems to me that a gun is a tool, not the real problem.

Why are people ending up, murdering each other?

If you look at how many kids are raised in America, it's really not to hard to figure out, in my opinion.

The prison system is full of people who have been abandoned, abused, and neglected, since birth. Not only that, but violence has been modeled for them, by whoever raises them over and over again in their own home. Many turn to gangs because they have little or no family. Many kids grow up being raised by a TV set or violent video games. Many have no hope. I think all that factors into this greatly. It isn't just a simple matter of.... "they had a gun and that must be the problem!".

This has been argued many times on here....

The Cost of America's Gun Addiction

For me it is about 1,000 bucks a month.

Nah, I like them as much as I do my skydiving or SCUBA diving gear. They are just tools to do things.

What we should really do is ban violence... I mean if we have a ban it will have to go away right? :S

California has the strictest gun control laws in the nation.

(is it possible that the laws aren't working?) :)

Gun control in California is working almost as well as their get tough on crime stance!!!

Helps to fatten the correction officers' pockets, but doesn't do jack shit to make the average citizen safer.

Looking to prevent your home from becoming a tagger's canvas? The city of LA has a plan that asks homeowners to pitch in or pay -- whether they want to or not.

All new buildings in Los Angeles -- including homes -- must have anti-graffiti coating under an ordinance approved unanimously by the City Council on Tuesday

blaming tv or violent video games is just as silly as blaming music or guns.

.............................................................
Since when is looking for a cause and effect silly?

If a person thinks that the availability of guns are the cause, I'm willing to listen. I may not fully agree, but I don't think their opinion is silly.

Really? You've never come across an opinion that you felt was silly?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, slowly this time in the hopes that at least some of the gun-ophobes might actually understand... Guns don't kill people any more than forks make people fat.

Possibly.

Remove them and there wouldn't be a problem.

Yes:

1. Guns don't kill anymore than Spoons make people fat.

2. If you REALLY wanted to save lives, you would work against obesity.
