"I am concerned that if the direction of the news is all blogosphere, all opinions, with no serious fact-checking, no serious attempts to put stories in context, that what you will end up getting is people shouting at each other across the void but not a lot of mutual understanding," he said.

He has captured the majority of threads here to a T.

Honestly, I'm not TOO worried about this one - what's 30 pieces of silver against the rest of the quadrupled deficit?

or the actual quote..

Quote

The president said he is "happy to look at" bills before Congress that would give struggling news organizations tax breaks if they were to restructure as nonprofit businesses.

"I haven't seen detailed proposals yet, but I'll be happy to look at them," Obama

It's sad how paranoid the conservatives are getting.

Nothing to do with paranioa. I got facts

And why the hell (and who would benifit from) would anybody want to run a non-profit newspaper? What would be the point?

But in the end is gov sticking its nose in where it dont belong yet again

What relevant facts are these?

The people benefit from it. One of the suggested acts was to bar political endorsements by newspapers claiming the nonprofit status. This would really just save smaller newspapers that are already filing for bankruptcy. People will have more news sources without paid political endorsements.

Is this the only reason not to pass the bill? that the government 'dont' belong here?

Compare the quality of journalism of NPR with that of FOXNews, CNN, or other for profit news outlets. When the goal is to make a profit, objectivity is often lost.

No, when you want to stay in the favor of the gov all objectivity is lost. And to boot, the most objective are the most profitable today. And NPR is NOT middle of the road by any means.......

Yes. it is the only one needed. Same for health care and they are already too deep into it before the crap they are trying to pass today comes into the picture.

This has nothing to do with health care. This is something that will help the country. And without a single reason as to why this could possibly be a bad thing, you go ranting about bailouts and state-run media.

Like I said before, its sad how paranoid the conservatives are getting.

And again, is it sad you have to define someone who disagrees with you a paranoid.

There is no reason to have this passed. None what so ever

Its not paranoia because I disagree with you. Its paranoia because you have a completely irrational fear of state run media with absolutely no facts or reason to back it up.

This is as simple as cutting failing newspapers some slack so they can provide news to the people, while keeping paid politics out. People deserve to have more choices than corporate media.

If you have any real argument against this I'm genuinely interested to hear it.

Sorry but a healthy distrust of any government is essential in my book. And what this gov is becoming everyone should feel that way.

And no, it is not simple. The gov is passing laws giving themselves a 90% share in the home mortgage business by either supplying the money or guaranteeing the loans, the house just votes to completely take student loans away from the private sector, they own two car companies, they own or control banks, they own or control insurance companies, they want the health care system and now newspapers?

You can trust them if you want to. Me? I will use your definition proudly then and be paranoid. Anyone else?
