LongWayToFall 0 #1 July 2, 2009 Well I was looking at uppers and came across a new round, called the .300 Fireball, that uses very large bullets shot at low velocities. Its main purpose is to be loaded subsonic and silenced, although you can put in more powder and lighter bullets and run them supersonic with good energy results at longer ranges as well, in fact more energy than the normal 5.56 delivers. My main purpose with this gun would be to build it as lightweight as possible, on every aspect. 16 inch barrel though, instead of 14.5 with fixed comp, is my only weight adder. So, what are the lightest barrels? Lowers? Hand guards? Stocks? I don't mind if it is a fixed stock. Anyways, let me know what you guys are thinking. My friend's ARs are so light, that I figured I would see how far I could push it......
warpedskydiver 0 #2 July 2, 2009 The lightest lower is a CAV Arms II polymer. Try the YHM lightweight or the Alexander Arms G-10 FF Tube The stock is integral a is the pistol grip. IIRC the entire thing shaves more than a pound off. I can weigh one if you like, but I just pulled the LPK out for a build I am doing for my nephew. He gets an AA Grendel with matched receivers in a 14.5" with a WCI Brake permanently attached, A2 stock Sabre Defence M4 profile, match grade, chrome lined, hammer forged bbl. also a 3.5-10x40 optic with IR It has a Colt LPK that is hand tuned to 3.5lbs Just remember that balance is more important than weight. If it is awkward or carries like shit it will feel heavier.
davjohns 1 #3 July 2, 2009 I'm not sure why you are going with this round. If you are going to have a fixed comp, you can't use a silencer. So, if that's not an issue, why subsonic? An off the shelf upper will allow you to use a 7.62 x 39. Same bullet diameter and decent balistics.I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.
warpedskydiver 0 #4 July 2, 2009 He is not using a permanently attached comp.
warpedskydiver 0 #5 July 2, 2009 I thought about building one too but decided on a 6.5 Grendel, which can be great at long distances and also be loaded subsonic as well with 129SST's or 130grain Berger VLDs There is someone loading it both supersonic and subsonic with 140 grain bullets as well. LongWayToFall 0 #6 July 3, 2009 Cool, I'll check out that lower. I need to do some research on the 6.5, does it have better energy/performance than the 5.56? I like the ability to fire the heavier bullets, 130 grains sounds nice. I will eventually get into reloading, the 300 whisper would pretty much require it, if I don't right away though is 6.5 easy to find? Thanks!
warpedskydiver 0 #7 July 3, 2009 Yes go to Alexanderarms.com and take a look around then go to 65grendel.com and read up on it I think it has far more potential for all aspects
LongWayToFall 0 #8 July 3, 2009 Cool round! Alright, so I think an ideal setup would be the composite lower and a CAR upper 14.5 inch with fixed FH (making it 16 oal) without forward assist, and flat topped. As far as the hand guards go, I think just standard m4s would be fine, unless there are lighter ones that aren't expensive. Those ones you linked me to are a bit pricey, and the 2nd one is for full length, correct? I was hoping to do this project on the cheaper end, so any cash savings would be helpful. Any flip up sights you would recommend? What about good quality lower parts kits? Thanks again for your help.
LongWayToFall 0 #9 July 3, 2009 Oh, also, the Alexander arms website seems to have 6.5 specific lowers, uppers, etc. The only thing that is really different is the barrel, bolt, gas block etc correct? I should be able to do it on the composite lower and pick my own stripped upper?
TomAiello 26 #10 July 3, 2009 QuoteCool, I'll check out that lower. I need to do some research on the 6.5, does it have better energy/performance than the 5.56? 6.5G goes a long way toward putting the "one rifle for all tasks" package together, and keeping it reasonably light. The round is great. The cost of ammo and the lack of options in rifles suck, though. You probably also ought to check out 6.8 (www.68forums.com and http://www.barrettrifles.com/ammo_6.8.aspx), which I don't like as much as 6.5G, but which has much better availability and pricing on ammo and options, and is also a pretty good step up from 5.56. It doesn't have the range of the 6.5G, but it does pretty well for the shorter stuff.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
LongWayToFall 0 #11 July 3, 2009 Damn you. After much research I have figured out that the 6.5 is a totally sweet, and totally unavailable round. Parts and ammo are impossible to find. Damn you.

I must confess that Bill Alexander is also my friend, but I did not know him before I became involved with the 6.5Grendel.
warpedskydiver 0 #13 July 3, 2009 QuoteDamn you. After much research I have figured out that the 6.5 is a totally sweet, and totally unavailable round. Parts and ammo are impossible to find. Damn you. Not impossible. Let me know what you want. You can PM me. Sure there is high demand, ammo was sold out quickly as well. I happen to know for a fact there are a few million rounds inbound. There will be four domestic manufacturers onlin soon as well. As it is now there is AA and Black Hills domestically. The Wolf MPT is pretty good and cheap. Don't bother with wolf soft point unless you want to pull the bullets and load with a decent bullet. The copper fouling on those was horrible.
warpedskydiver 0 #14 July 3, 2009 That 14.5" upper you liked is a great shooter. It is a Sabre Defence upper and bbl. Very accurate, possibly better than an 18" bbl I just got 4 of them for some of he guys, one is a jumper and dz.commer and an original FB.
AggieDave 6 #15 July 3, 2009 Now that you've found the lack of ammo for what you want, check out LaRue's version of the 7.62 AR variant. --"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
warpedskydiver 0 #16 July 3, 2009 $$$$Although Mark is a great guy and makes great products.
AggieDave 6 #17 July 3, 2009 Yeah, well, he is proud of his products, but you do get what you pay for. I only have a couple of his products, but they're top notch. I really think his rail is the best on the market. A buddy of mine just put together an AR using a LaRue upper and lower. Wow, what a nice weapon.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
LongWayToFall 0 #18 July 3, 2009 I can't find anything on his website about 7.62, although judging by how cool his uppers and lowers look, it has gotta be a nice piece. I was thinking, $250 for the lower isn't a terrible price, but then saw the disclaimer saying you have to buy his $1300 upper to qualify for the lower, ouch! Haha
TomAiello 26 #19 July 3, 2009 It used to be on the opening screen, back when it was first released. As noted, it's nice, but pricey.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
