News update:
Arizona Legislature Takes The Lead In Backing Self-Defense

"The Arizona Senate passed three important self-defense bills in a session that lasted into the early morning hours Wednesday. First, SB 1113 enables law-abiding Right-to-Carry permit holders to carry firearms for self-defense in restaurants. This NRA-backed bill passed by an overwhelming, bi-partisan majority of 19-8 and will now be sent to Governor Jan Brewer’s (R) desk for her consideration..."

If this gets signed...

What will the anti gun crowd say when shootings do not happen every night at the bar?

They'll hope that nobody notices their predictions of dire consequences don't come true.

They haven't come true in any of the other 40 states which have this law.
They haven't come true in any of the 40+ states that have concealed handgun laws.
They haven't come true in any state that allows guns in employee cars in work parking lots.

But then they'll trot out the very same "wild west" and "blood in the streets" fear campaign again for the next proposed pro-gun law.

Since it's already that way in 40 states, the 41st one isn't likely to make much difference in what they do or do not say.

Can you imagine such a law in countries with drinking culture problems such as the UK!? Imagine kicking out time: "Time please gentlemen, drink up..." BANG!>:(

Or at the queue outside the chippie: "D'ye wantae no cut in front of us ya prick..." BANG!

Instead of fists flying on a Friday night it'd be 9mm - carnage!:)

'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.'

So you're saying that Brits are less able to hold their liquor and their civility than Americans?
That you blokes just can't be trusted to behave responsibly?

Associated Press Writer – Sun Jun 28, 12:26 pm ET
PHOENIX – There was a time in the Wild West that cowboys had to check their guns before they could pull up a bar stool for a drink — rules that protected against the saloon gunfights that came to define the frontier era in places like Arizona.

What is interesting about this is, more gun carriers 'hid' their guns and carried smaller weapons. In pockets, up their sleeves, in their boots and etc. In fact, at the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral, the Earps hid their pistols under their coats as well as the shotguns they carried.

Even though this recent bill passed, bar owners still, reserve the right to post a sign saying 'No Guns'. As was brought-out earlier in this thread, those who hold a Concealed Carry permit are held to a higher standard and more than likely would not carry in a bar. If, they do, I feel confident they would stay sober. As stated in the article you provided, I agree that this law could be of help. Especially to law enforcement. I tend to agree with this law.

:D It's not that we can't hold our drink - it's that so many make a conscious decision prior to intoxication to do the exact opposite! The Americans go for a night out which usually involves drinking a couple of bottles of budpisser whilst the British tend to go out to get utterly smashed on very strong continental lager, Jager bombs, and shorts, then eat kebabs and have a fight.

So yeah, when it comes to a piss up, the pissheads are the last people you could trust to behave responsibly. They'd rather: "Kick your fuckin' head in".:)

This Arizona law only permits people with concealed carry licenses to carry their gun into a bar. In order to get that license, they have to be vetted by the government, and proven that they have no criminal record or history of violence.

The people you are describing are not likely to pass such background checks, as their behavior will likely have led to some criminal charges at some point along the way. Thus, they would not qualify for the gun carry were they in Arizona.

So, you shouldn't presume that the people with guns in bars in Arizona, are like the irresponsible pissheads that you are describing in Britain.

Well, having drank in numerous bars in Arizona (Cactus Moon in Tucson was my favourite) and Britain, naturally I wouldn't presume they're both worthy of a similiar comparison. I even described how they're both completely different earlier, so what on earth is your point mate?

edit: Drinking recently at the Voodoo Lounge in 'Vegas we were discussing the pleasant aspect of an open air bar on top of a multi-story casino. We were also discussing the amount of beer bottles, glasses and people that'd be thrown over the side if it was located in the UK with the same security personnel on duty. . .
