In my opinion, if someone is interacting with a group and PURPOSELY and REPETITIVELY uses words with questionable/offensive meanings to that audience, then he/she is either baiting or doesn't care. If you know something is offensive to someone... EVEN IF it isn't to you... the RESPECTFUL discourse would not include that term. Find a different word - there are plenty out there. If you feel you HAVE to use THAT SPECIFIC one.... why? On this site, we have MANY different nations and MANY different beliefs. And although it's difficulty to be "PC" to all of them, at attempt at "respectful" would be a nice change. Now... I'm sure that my opinion, as just a "Seppo" probably doesn't mean much of anything to you, so I'm not really laying a bet on that change. Back to the original topic. The picture of the Presidents. Not funny, in my opinion. It is racist. But I ALSO think the baboon caricatures are wrong. Which is "more wrong"? Probably this one, but that SHOULD not excuse the others. I might not agree with President Obama on certain topics. Nor did I always agree with President Bush. But BOTH are/were Presidents of the United States. Political satire as always been part of history... since the court jesters .... but that doesn't mean what the jester says is "right." You also have to look at the INTENT of the satire - is it to simply point out a bad decision or a policy or is it just a personal attack. This picture is just a personal attack. It was TRULY wrong that a Republican legislative aide sent it out in a mass email. She SHOULD be fired. Jim_Hooper 4 #128 September 6, 2009 Having spent much of the last 25 years reporting from various countries in Africa - and written a number of books on conflict there - I can say that the educated black Africans I know would find our Kiwi correspondent's comments extremely paternalistic and patronizing. Others would be laughing at him behind his back. Their attitude would be that they really don't need - or want - to be defended by someone as pig-ignorent and ill-mannered as this individual. His obsessive self-righteousness in letting us all know that "some-of-my-best-friends-aren't-white", along with an equally unbalanced urge to be deliberately offensive to everyone, raises some fairly interesting questions best left to a psychoanalyst (though "transference" comes to mind). He's a silly and inadequate little person - the product, I suspect, of over-indulgent parents - who desperately craves attention. As far as the subject of this thread, I've just come back from a month in Ethiopia, south Sudan, Uganda and Kenya. The reaction to the Obama poster was, "Who cares? Ready for another beer?" They would have found Master Kiwi's rantings irrelevant and embarrassing. And would definitely have laughed at him behind his back. As we all should. www.jimhooper.co.uk

Others would be laughing at him behind his back. It depends on where you stand on racism is I suppose. I bet there are plenty of dipshit racists that would have laughed, check the stats on the poll. Define educated black africans? We rented a house off some so called educated black africans that were making a killing (millions of dollars) in the tourism industry. they paid thier local staff half of the minimum wage, $35 per month, we doubled it (for our gardener and ascari) and gave them more holidays. While we were there two of the staff of the said educated africans died of exposure on mount kilimanjaro due to having inadequate clothing and footwear. they would ascend the mountain more frequntly than is advised due the the lack of pay they recieved, while down the road is a market that sells second hand clothes with down jackets and hiking boots for less than $5 (from aid) yet they were too cheap to supply them. not the case for all, but definately then norm. If there was ever a bad example, you just made it! You obviously don't oppose poverty? or uneven distribution of wealth? because your rationale is stupid and you defend blatant racists. you should be the one to ignore!"When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

nigel99 586 #132 September 7, 2009 QuoteQuoteWhile I don't find it funny I don't think it is racist. ALL political leaders are mocked and there are cartoons in abundance of Tony Blair with huge ears, people chose to make a big thing out of Obama's skin colour - this is just a satirical impression of it. I've seen pictures of both George Bush and Robert Mugabe depicted as baboons - why is the picture of Mugabe decried as racist but not Bush? Hog wash, the image had normal pictures of the other presedents, and an image of some googlie eyes and a black background. Mugabe and bush as baboons, was comparing them to baboons, a carechature is a carecature, this image is basicallly calling your presedent a nigger. It is not funny, there is no excuse for it and anyone that thinks it is funny is a racist cunt! First off he aint my president. I tend to agree with others on your use of language that you know offends detracts from the whole argument. Lastly I grew up in Africa and I think Jim's comments are a fairly accurate representation of how most africans would see the picture. In fact I do wonder when paternalistic defence of a race becomes a form of racism in itself?Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. To wit: “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life,” said Judge Sotomayor. Now, try transposing "wise Latina woman" and "white male", put it in the mouth of someone guilty of the latter and then imagine 'human rights' advocates suffering a collective case of the vapors. (You are following the logic here, aren't you?) Oh yeah. What with all those lynch mobs of Latina women coming to string up white men, we'd better take care! But the first sentence in the second paragraph is absolutely correct. The second sentence, however, reveals your bias in refusing to recognize that I deplore both, as my qualifying comment makes abundantly clear.
