quade 4 #1 May 30, 2009 Ran across this story today and really wanted to bitch about it. http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/meast/05/30/saudi.arabia.execution/index.html Seriously, wtf? 1) We prop their government up for oil. 2) It's not really a kingdom, it's a dictatorship. A very wealthy dictatorship, but one none the less. 3) It's a religious police state. 4) We also have capital punishment. 5) Uh, in this case, the guy seems to have deserved the death penalty. Grrr... I just don't know where to go with this.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
Rookie120 0 #2 May 30, 2009 Quote1) We prop their government up for oil. Since the lib's won't let us drill on our own land we have to get it from somewhere. Quote2) It's not really a kingdom, it's a dictatorship. A very wealthy dictatorship, but one none the less. And how do you think we could ever do to change the thinking? I don't think there is anything we could or should do. Quote3) It's a religious police state. I bet is nice as long as you bow to Allah. Quote4) We also have capital punishment. Yes we do and not used as much as it should be. Although sawing a guys head off and then puttin it on display is a bit much dont you think? Quote5) Uh, in this case, the guy seems to have deserved the death penalty. I agree! I would have like them to fire up ole sparky instead of choopin his head off.If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!

It is their main export to the world. How they spend the money is certainly worthy of debate. Quote2) It's not really a kingdom, it's a dictatorship. A very wealthy dictatorship, but one none the less. It is a monarchy, which is a dictatorship, and as the Saudi ruling family is considered royalty, and thus, a kingdom. Does that mean I think American Presidents should bow to them, no. Quote3) It's a religious police state. It's a certainly not a republic for sure. To fit the definition you've noted, please see Iran. Quote4) We also have capital punishment. Yes. Quote5) Uh, in this case, the guy seems to have deserved the death penalty. It does seem that way. QuoteGrrr... I just don't know where to go with this. Where is there to go? I'm no fan of Saudi Arabia, but I don't have much issue with the fact that they have a death penalty. I don't agree much with their method, but it does indeed get a point across doesn't it?So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! rwieder 0 #4 May 31, 2009 Paul: You know as well as i do that that was the land that the son of god traveled. They made their own laws back then, they just so happen to still enforce them there as well. As far as us propping up their Govt' with their oil exports, believe me, there's 20 other countries waiting in line for their oil & natural gas reserves. TomAiello 26 #5 May 31, 2009 I think it's actually an Oligarchy. I'm generally against the death penalty because I mistrust government enough that I don't want it to have power of life and death. I don't think it's any of my business how they run their internal affairs.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

ryoder 1,590 #9 June 1, 2009 Quote It's a religious police state. Indeed. And in a police state, the function of the courts is to rubber-stamp arrests made by the police via convictions. And none of those pesky, drawn-out appeals processes that might reveal the police made a mistake; Just a quick conviction, and punishment, then case closed. Some years back when the Michael Fay caning incident occurred in Singapore, I saw an investigative report on the criminal justice system there. One thing that stood out was that the police there get a conviction rate slightly over 99%. Also, a cultural expert explained that in contrast to the US system where the primary purpose is to punish the perpetrator of the crime, in cultures such as Singapore, the objective is to make and example of someone to deter others from committing the same crime. And if the example just happens to be the actual perpetrator, that is just a happy coincidence."There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones. I was there for a few weeks, and they had just started a chinese-style propoganda campaign about curbing government corruption. They arrested one mid-level government official, and charged him with taking a bribe of about $500. His sentence: 31 years in jail, no parole. I thought it was just about making money for the Singaporean government. I think there was a $1500 fine for jaywalking, something like a $1000 fine for not flushing a public toilet, $500 for spitting on the sidewalk, etc, etc.Trapped on the surface of a sphere.
