happythoughts 0 #1 May 22, 2009 abcnews It sounds very much like the DEMs want an "exit strategy" from Obama. What? Action without an exit strategy? What was he thinking? QuoteThe U.S. Senate today voted overwhelmingly to block funding to shut down the detainee center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, dealing another blow to one of President Obama's signature national security issues. Senate Democrats are rejecting President Obama's request for money to close the detainee center at Guantanamo Bay. Lawmakers want the president to show a plan on how his administration would close the detainee center, and what they'd do with the 240 prisoners housed there. In a 90-6 vote, the Senate followed in the footsteps of the House of Representatives and passed an amendment deleting $80 million in funds from a war funding bill earmarked to close the Guantanamo Bay prison. QuoteRepublicans have been raising alarm bells for weeks about the prospect of Obama's planned Guantanamo closure. Those darned REPs... saying the same thing for a year now? QuoteWhere will the detainees go, they've asked over and over. Will they be tried in the United States? And will former detainees, if cleared of the charges against them, be walking the U.S. streets? Democrats have answered by rejecting Obama's request for money to start the base closure. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev Quote"Democrats under no circumstances will move forward without a comprehensive, responsible plan from the president. We will never allow terrorists to be released into the United States," declared Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., at a press conference Tuesday after meeting with other Democratic senators. QuoteIn passing the amendment to remove the $80 million from the war funding bill needed to close the base, the Senate communicated that Obama must first present a plan for how he plans to close the detainee center and what he plans to do with the detainees housed there. Quote"If terrorists are released in the United States, part of what we don't want is for them be put in prisons in the United States. We don't want them around the United States," Reid said. Interesting? If they are found not guilty, Reid still wants them out of the US? What is happening to the Bill of Rights under the DEMs? Can't the innocent just walk the streets? QuoteReid's words echo the talking points of Republicans, particularly Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who has pressured Democrats for weeks on Guantanamo Bay. Once again... the DEMs win on one platform, but echo the REPs. Quote"Guantanamo is a secure. state-of-the-art facility. It's got courtrooms for military commissions. Everyone who visits is impressed with it," he said. "Even the administration acknowledges that Guantanamo is humane and well-run. From... we've got to close it because of torture... to... "humane... well-run... state-of-the-art" Must have been humane torture that the DEMs have been protesting. So... in two weeks, from... -closing Gtmo because of the torture -getting fair trials that are not in military tribunals -rights of the accused. To... -back to military tribunals -in Gtmo -because it is so humane -no one wants to close it. Basic difference? REPs state what they always said. DEMs now state what REPs always said, because it makes sense, instead of puking up the campaign rhetoric... again... Instead of each week announcing a new section of the REP campaign platform, why not just admit it. ...also, a new signature allowing licensed carry-conceal in parks. Not to derail the main topic (because you already did by including this) but certainly you can't be "proud" of the way that got pushed through? Gag me with the whole place setting. "...but mom... they made me." I'm getting a little tired of the DEMs trying to have it both ways. This record is skipping on a different track now. Any time they do something, in trade for political capital, they try to sell it as the "greater good". "We had to..." "They made us..." Please. Politics. The POTUS doesn't have to do Anything. I remember hearing before about how Obama was really against nuclear non-proliferation, but "he had to" deal with India because of his "regional responsibilities". (That deal was a supremely bad idea) Reagan used to make deals and trade back and forth. He said that "he only got his way 80% of the time and that is why he got so much done". O is in the big leagues. He's been a Chicago machine politician. If the DEMs are going to play that BS game, they're going to have to try their pouty face somewhere else. Maybe they should have gotten Meryl Streep to be the White House press representative.
rushmc 23 #4 May 22, 2009 I give him kudos for trying to keep a promise. He looks like a fool for making a promise he will not be able to keep. He will try and make it look like he did. Comentary from yesterdays speech. QuoteThe Center for Constitutional Rights President Michael Ratner said that President Obama "wrapped himself in the Constitution and then proceeded to violate it by announcing he would send people before irredeemably flawed military commissions and seek to create a preventive detention scheme that only serves to move Guantanamo to a new location and give it a new name.” http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2009/05/president-ob-13.html Please pay special attention to the underlined part."America will never be destroyed from the outside, if we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." happythoughts 0 #5 May 23, 2009 O has problems. The DEM political double-speak machine told him what to say and he said it. That got him elected. Now QuoteIn a 90-6 vote, the Senate followed in the footsteps of the House of Representatives and passed an amendment deleting $80 million in funds from a war funding bill earmarked to close the Guantanamo Bay prison. 90 to 6 ? Ouch. The Ides of May ? I don't think O thought "got your back" involved a well-place knife. Apparently, the DEMs are against "change". QuoteRepublicans have been raising alarm bells for weeks about the prospect of Obama's planned Guantanamo closure. Where will the detainees go, they've asked over and over. Will they be tried in the United States? And will former detainees, if cleared of the charges against them, be walking the U.S. streets? Democrats have answered by rejecting Obama's request for money to start the base closure. This could get ugly. People on the inside of the tent usually piss towards the outside. TankBuster 0 #6 May 23, 2009 Promising to close Gitmo helped get Obama elected, but actually DOING it will cause a lot of the Dems to get bumped off. Can you imagine the TV ads against those who will actually vote to allow the terrorists ino our lovely states? Obama can do no wrong, until he begins to fuck with our electability. OOPS, guess we didn't think that one through. The forecast is mostly sunny with occasional beer.
1969912 0 #7 May 23, 2009 I wonder if it's all smoke and mirrors. Obama makes the campaign promise w/o any real thought about the realities of closing Gitmo. After the election his people start looking into it and realize it's pretty much unworkable, as well as an unnecessary and stupid thing to do. In order to help him save face (and prevent yet another 180) the Senate just withholds funding. Cynical view? EDIT: The above happens with the full knowledge and blessing of Maobama. TankBuster 0 #8 May 23, 2009 QuoteCynical view? Possibly, but I think he'll keep pushing it. What will be interesting is what will happen to the scumbags while in prison. (Not the Democrats - the terrorists) Will they be killed, Dahmer style, or will they recruit new members. The forecast is mostly sunny with occasional beer. happythoughts 0 #9 May 24, 2009 Bringing terrorists to the US can have many exciting conclusions. 1- They are entitled to private communications with their attorneys. The mafia bosses used to use this privilege to run their businesses. 2- They recruit other prisoners that they contact. 3- The most exciting result? They might not convict everyone. The rules of a court of law require evidence or they just be not convicted. Then... they are in the US and not guilty of anything. Somebody who was held in Gtmo for 7 years and is unhappy about it. Not actually guilty, but just not convicted... and walking around in your neighborhood thanks to the DEMs campaign stupidity. It was fun during the campaign to get the ACLU to nip at the heels of the other side, but reality is worrying the DEMs right now.

Which is what we should do with innocent foreigners. Not necessarily. It depends on their country of origin. We are legally forbidden to send them anywhere that there is a reasonable belief they will be tortured.Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
