WASHINGTON (CNN) — The same day Dick Cheney delivered a major speech on the battle against terrorism, a new national poll suggests that favorable opinions of the former vice president are on the rise. But the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey, released Wednesday morning, indicates that a majority of Americans still have an unfavorable opinion of Cheney. Fifty-five percent of people questioned in the poll say they have an unfavorable opinion of the former vice president. Thirty-seven percent say they have a favorable opinion of Cheney, up eight points from January when he left office. In the past two months the former vice president has become a frequent critic of the new Administration in numerous national media interviews. “Is Cheney’s uptick due to his visibility as one of the most outspoken critics of the Obama administration? Almost certainly not,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “Former President George W. Bush's favorable rating rose six points in that same time period, and Bush has not given a single public speech since he left office.” The poll suggests that 41 percent of Americans hold a favorable opinion of the former president, with 57 percent viewing him unfavorably. The survey’s release came just a few hours before Cheney spoke out Thursday on the war against terror during a speech at the American Enterprise Institute, a Washington based think tank. The former vice president defended the Bush Administration’s handling of the war on terror and challenged the Obama Administration’s attempt to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted May 14-17, with 1,010 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey’s sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points. jclalor 12 #7 May 22, 2009 This is the same Dick Cheney who use to scoff at his low pole numbers and say how he was not interested in what the public thought. The only reason his poll numbers are a bit higher now is that the publc has seen more of him in the last two weeks than they did the last 4 years he was VP. Poor Dick is making a desperate bid not to go down in history for being the tyrant that he is. He figures if he sceams loud enough about Obama being too easy on national security, and if there is an attack, It will all be Obamas fault. I believe he wants this to happen so he can tell everyone I told you so, This borders on treason. When the left was critical of Bush, the right could not sceam loud enough about them being critical of a sitting president during a time of war. Cheney seems to have no problem doing it now. Bush at least has the class to keep his opinions private.

They are what they are regardless of what he thinks. QuoteThe only reason his poll numbers are a bit higher now is that the publc has seen more of him in the last two weeks than they did the last 4 years he was VP. Maybe. I would actually agree. That doesn't change the numbers, though. QuotePoor Dick is making a desperate bid not to go down in history for being the tyrant that he is. Name one law Cheney authored that labels him a tyrant. I don't care for him much, but you're just name calling for the sake of sounding off. Quote He figures if he sceams loud enough about Obama being too easy on national security, and if there is an attack, It will all be Obamas fault. If there is an attack attempt, it isn't Obama's fault. If there is a successful attack because of relaxed methods or policy then it will be Obama's fault. Cheney has no effect on either situation from his current position. QuoteI believe he wants this to happen so he can tell everyone I told you so, This borders on treason. Hypothetical leading to a hypothetical leads to your conclusion of treason. QuoteWhen the left was critical of Bush, the right could not sceam loud enough about them being critical of a sitting president during a time of war. Cheney seems to have no problem doing it now. He didn't speak up until Obama released edited documents. Cheney would've faded away as expected if Obama hadn't opened that can of worms. -------------------------------------------------- Stay positive and love your life. sundevil777 102 #10 May 22, 2009 Obama said he didn't want to look back or some such feel good such platitude, then proceeded to look back and blame Bush some twenty something times in a single speech. Obama correctly had a new hole ripped. Only 3 people waterboarded under tightly controlled circumstances, only after extensively trying other methods, and with crucial results. Cheney is completely justified to answer the finger pointing and expect the documents describing the results of the waterboarding be released.People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
nerdgirl 0 #11 May 22, 2009 Quote Only 3 people waterboarded under tightly controlled circumstances, only after extensively trying other methods, and with crucial results. Would you identify some of the "crucial results"? The most crucial results from KSM were obtained off his laptop. After waterboarding KSM confessed to everything from a plot to assassinate former President Carter to a plot to kill Pope John Paul II to the February 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. Some of the things he claimed to have been responsible would have required him to be in multiple places at the same time. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed also compares himself to President George Washington – I doubt that is what you mean by "crucial results." W/r/t the 2nd detainee who the CIA confirmed was waterboarded, Abu Zubaydah, the crucial results gained from Abu Zubaydah, the leading piece that is mentioned – the identity of Ramzi bin al Shibh – was already known (FBI agent Dennis Lormel told Congress who Ramzi bin Al Shibh was in February 2002, i.e., a month before Abu Zubaydah was even apprehended) and was confirmed through traditional interrogation methods employed by the FBI before the CIA contractors arrived. The 3rd terrorist on whom the former CIA Director acknowledged “enhanced interrogation” techniques were used including waterboarding, Abd al Rahim al Nashiri, made up a long list of al Qa’eda plots and attacks so his captors would stop torturing him, even telling interrogators that Osama bin Laden had a nuclear bomb. Al Nashiri, in all likelihood, had very useful information. What was lost & how many opportunities were wasted because ‘enhanced interrogation’ methods were used? When the signal to noise ratio becomes so low, it ceases to be effective for anything other than distracting US investigatory efforts. Information obtained through torture by third-party states has produced bad/faulty intel that has been passed on to US policymakers, e.g., Ibn al Shaykh al Libbi. /Marg Act as if everything you do matters, while laughing at yourself for thinking anything you do matters.
