way to go obama!

the president has decided no to release more photos of detainee abuse and i must commend that. i think he listened to his generals and made the right decision for the right reasons and i must give credit when credit is due, so thank you, mr. president.

"Obama made a brief statement on his decision late Wednesday afternoon. He said he'd concluded that the photos wouldn't add useful knowledge about detainee abuse but would "further inflame anti-American opinion and . . . put our troops in greater danger."

To be precise, Obama turned this over to the courts. Had he really believed in this position, he would have signed an executive order saying the same. Being the limp spine political animal he is (and seeking re-election) he gave up his executive power so as to seem to be “fair”. In essence, he is a wimp. He has no guts and cares only about the polls and his “popularity. He could give a shit less about the troops.

I agree. Once the fact is stated that torture was used, there isn't any more value added to releasing pictures. They would just be inflammatory.

The ACLU is claiming that this is a flip-flop
on his campaign promise of "a new age in govt transparency".

I don't see how more pictures would help anything.

Your opinion has no value, because if Obama declared that the Sun rose in the east this morning you'd find fault.

No, I am not slamin him for it. but it is what is is.

It is a political ploy. He could end this in a stroke of a pen. But that would make his base made and the I am popular-o-meter would take a hit. And that is what his life is based on.

hopefully one of our lawyers can jump in and clarify this, but i don't believe he can end this by executive order. the current ruling is that he must release them, but he still has a couple of legal avenues he can take, one of them being the supreme court. i also don't get the impression that he makes decisions based soley on polls.

True. Not by executive order. He is getting his
legal counsel to come up with a new twist.

The media is not his buddies today.
ABC news

ABC World News added that "last week, the President told White House Council Greg Craig to prepare new legal arguments that releasing the photographs would harm national security -- an about-face that devastated officials of the ACLU, who thought they had an ally in the White House on issues of transparency

What? Did hear "national security"?
Is he using Bush's speech writers now?

CBS
Quote

CBS Evening News reported that "when he took office," the President "promised transparency, and, as part of that, he said he would comply with a court order to release photographs that allegedly show US troops abusing prisoners. But today, three weeks later, he's changed his mind."

Three weeks? He barely got Flip out of his mouth, when it was time to talk Flop.

Here comes the missing biggie...

Remember the "signing statements" that Obama
criticized Bush for? They "interpreted" legislation.
Used to "spin" the definition of legislation.

Wait to see how his legal team uses this to get out
of the photo jam.

...and next up to bat? The Obama Signing Statement Legal Team... :D:D

Actually, I'd question his qualifications for aking that statement. "What is your education? What makes you think the sun rises in the east? Have you studied it?"

I'd point out that the sun may rise in the southeast or northeast depending on the time of year and your physical location.

Wait. This is Obama we're talking about? Not Dubya?

Obama is a fucking genius! He took a stand against the religious dogmatists.

Surely you will ask for an internet referrence as well (and insist that it not be Wikipedia)?

I'm not entirely disappointed. I expected it.

Look - I knew he and Congress were going to try to one-up Bush and his Congressessessess in the competition of who can run the biggest deficits.

I knew while he and Congress were at it, they'd look at any and all forms of socialism they could get.

I suspected that he and Congress would support the denial of civil liberties, keep a war afloat, and generally do all of that "law and order" stuff that is actually an "I'm in charge" thing.

Campaign as an idealist (never go into details) and govern as a pragmatist.

As these are photos from UCMJ investigations, part of the military, it is certainly within his purview to tie this off immediately.

Of course he's running for reelection and of course he cares about the polls!

It is the nature of our POLITICAL system. And even at my level of elected office some people weigh their decisions with how it will effect their ability to continue to lead. (read be reelected:P). IF you believe you have something to offer to the community, either local, state, or national, and you want to be able to continue to hold office because you believe your doing good and your good at it, then you are taking into consideration the like minded voters who made your leadership possible. If you want someone who doesn't have to consider if they will be able to continue to lead pick a king or a czar.

Do I like it? Hell no. And I don't do it. I have no use for the organized political parties. The City Council seat I hold is non-partisan so I don't have to put either one (or I) after my name. And never will. But, fellow council members still campaign, they still sometimes make decisions (not neccessarily important ones) based on how many people they won't piss off.

Me? I make decisions that I believe are fair, in the best interest of the continued health of the City, and the best interests of the broader community. I've always said I would never get re-elected because I was going to piss everyone off at least once. So far I've been elected to three terms. If I get a fourth this fall I think I'll be the first ever in our town. I'm often in the minority on votes because I don't compromise what I believe is right. This doesn't make me a saint. It makes me someone who doesn't care about getting re-elected enough to change my belief and my vote.

Often the City Council is accused of not listening. That's almost never true(there are a few kooks that we ignore, just like on forums;)). Just because we don't agree or do what the 10 angry folks in the room want doesn't mean we don't listen. We have a representative form of government. At least in my state. It's not a straw poll. And I have to weigh ALL of the information I have.

Unfortunately I have served with others who DO do what the 10 angry folks in the room want. Who will tell anyone what they want to hear. Will vote against all common sense and even the controlling law just to please one person.

It doesn't bother me a bit that Obama might learn more information, get more opinions, and change his mind. And if some of those decisions have an element of politics to them, that's unfortunate but that's the reality of our system.

I have the luxury of not having to play the political game. I offer my services to the folks that vote. If they want me great. If not fine. Unfortunately what does happen is some of the least qualified do rise in the political ranks because they are the best at the political game. But I don't put Obama in that catagory. Does he make political decisions? OF COURSE! You can be there without doing so.

I don't mind the idea of political parties. The idea of like minded people coming together to advance their opinions and beliefs is fine. But when it becomes a checklist, a litmus test, an adherence to dogma, an unwavering belief that the other guy is ALWAYS wrong it's worthless. I don't mind someone who has a different belief or opinion than I do. As long as it's well reasoned. But someone who votes a particular way because that is what will get them liked the most, whether it's good for the community or not gets no respect from me. Likewise, people that embrace a particular position or belief (like Pro life OR Pro Choice) because is will get them the most votes gets no respect. I much more respect someone who holds a particular belief out of personal convection than political expediency, even if I'm adamantly opposed to their position.

Okay, rant off.:$

they do, but the aclu has already won a freedom of information lawsuit to have the photos released, and won. i would think this is one of those separation of powers things, but i would also think that there are limits and exceptions to that. this may be one of those exceptions, i don't know.

Sweet. He can put words together to make a sentence (when someone else writes it and he's reading it) so let's make him leader of the country. The second part remains to be seen.
