NHS & alcohol recommendations.

The NHS recommends that:
Men should not regularly drink more than three to four units of alcohol per day;
Women should not regularly drink more than two to three units of alcohol per day.

OK, 3 units is about a pint of beer, maybe a pint and a half.

so how likely is it that the Brits will go out to a pub, drink one beer, and call it a night??:P

No one that I know .... but you don't have to go out every night and get bladdered. Every now and then isn't going to do you too much damage. :D = good

What sort of units are these where a single beer = 3? Should a unit be the standard consumption quantity - for the Brits, say a pitcher?

What's a pitcher:P Is that like a couple of pints or something?

Different beers have different amounts of alcohol (yes beer can contain alcohol, which may come as a shock to some 'murkans:P).

A unit is defined as 10ml of alcohol. So one's recommend limit is defined by both volume and strength.... A pint of good beer is about 3 units or there abouts.

While we may have some domestic beers with only 10ml of alcohol, any decent brew would be at least 2 or 3.

Pitchers are not strictly defined (like the .5l line on German mugs), but figure 4 good sized glasses, so 48-64 fluid ounces (3-4 pints).

Actually, I really thought that it was a good idea to buy beer (and cocktails!!) by the pitcher when I've been over there.... There are a lot of places over here, where that really wouldn't work .... people would but one each!!!!

I also know that there are good beers over there... it's just become a running 'joke' that you have crap suds:P

>Different beers have different amounts of alcohol . . .

Indeed. And the more I 'research' beer here in San Diego, the more I come to appreciate the lower alcohol session beers. Sure, Angel's Share is one of the best beers on the planet, but I can only drink so much of a 12% beer.
