I doubt that it would "break the bank." Even if same-sex marriage was allowed at the federal level, I think that the spouses in same-sex marriages who would get VA benefits would be a very small number compared to the spouses in heterosexual marriages who get VA benefits.

And I don't think that anyone is suggesting that we treat non-veterans before treating veterans.

No. I just don't feel the hatred towards gay veterans that you do. I wouldn't take any pleasure in seeing a veteran's wife denied benefits that other veterans's wives get. But if that's what makes you happy, well . . .

Religion does not possess full rights to the word or concept of marriage. Both the word and the concept were around prior to the Christian bible (New Testament), the Jewish Tanakh (Old Testament), and even the Zoroastrian Avesta ("The First month of marriage is the moon of honey", where we get the phrase honeymoon), which pre-dates both the jewish and christian religions.

If ancient religions want to cite the word and concept of marriage, fine. If most people in the world want to use relgious leaders to preside over weddings, fine. But that doesn't give religion exclusive rights to marriage.
