Brutal Law Strips Afghan Women of Rights

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has just signed a law that forces women to obey their husbands' sexual demands, keeps women from leaving the house -- even for work or school -- without a husband's permission, automatically grants child custody rights to fathers and grandfathers before mothers, and favors men in inheritance disputes and other legal matters. In short, the law again consigns Afghan women to lives of brutal repression.

"This is really, really dangerous for everybody in Afghanistan," Soraya Sobhrang of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission said in a telephone interview from Kabul. Noting that violence against women already is rampant, Sobhrang said the new law effectively "legalizes all violence against women in Afghanistan."

The legislation zoomed through Afghanistan's parliament. Karzai, who faces elections in August, signed it in an apparent effort to placate conservative religious forces that are said to hold the balance of power in his re-election bid. The United Nations Development Fund for Women is still analyzing a final version of the legislation but says it is "seriously concerned." The law appears to contradict both the Afghan constitution, which guarantees equal rights for men and women, and international conventions on human rights.

When you oppress people based on race everyone gets all worked up ( South Africa) but when you do it in the name of religion everyone seems to look the other way.
People in the US would be appalled if they knew the laws pertaining to women of our middle eastern allies.

Then tell them - educate them. They need to know what their tax dollars are supporting

Karzai isn't our friend. He may possibly be the enemy of our enemy.

The focus on multiculturalism that I encountered throughout my education ultimately impressed upon me the idea that my cultural beliefs here in the US are no better or worse than any other culture.

We should not criticize such things as gang life, maculine-centric middle east cultures, terrorist bombings or female circumcision. Indeed, we would understand and embrace the cultural and ethnic diversity of the world, and not allow our own judeo-christian democratic white ethno-centrist superiority complex to berate or deride those who see things differently.

Let us not be so judgmental. You all sound like white heterosexual right-wing christian bible-thumpers.

At least that's what I was taught. It's only been the right wing that has,in the past, found themselves so arrogant and superior as to presume to tell other cultures how to live. Ergo - you all are right wing.

Thus, Sshut your mouths and open your minds and quit going in lock-step with Rush Limbaugh and Pat Buchanan.

a fierce loathing of moral relativism does not belong only to the right wing. one shouldn't generalize so handily.

nor does radical relativism belong only to the far left.

not sure where you went to school, but in my philosophy classes, we were taught the logical inconsistencies of relativism. Now before you say "but you went to a military academy, there are no liberals there! you got a right wing education!", know that in those same classes we also had fierce and heated discussions about the origins of objective morals, and were taught how proof of God is NOT a rational or logical exercise, and other "liberal" concepts.

my philosophy instructor was an AF officer, probably conservative, who knows. As one of the few liberals in the student body, i often found myself agreeing with and siding with him in several class discussions when everyone else was insisting we were wrong.

I'm a left-wing, tree-hugging liberal...but i also know that moral relativism is the biggest crock of shit that modern philosophy has tried to dump on people. It's sad that so many buy into it.

I went to school at UCSB. I was frequently informed that to state my negative viewpoints on another culture was wrong. They never seemed to grasp my point that in my culture it is okay to do that, and that if they had any intellectual honesty they would not say that my viewpoint was wrong.

They examples that I gave were my real life responses. Female circumcision was a huge topic back then. So I asked whether it was acceptable to them. Thus was also during the OK City timeframe where I openly dared them to defend the militia culture. Of course, "moral relativism" was merely their way of saying that nobody has the right to disagree with them.

It is why I mentioned "Shut your mouth and open your mind.". Another technique of ceasing all discussion.

From my experience, moral relativism has been almost the exclusive domain of the left. I agree - it is a huge crock of shit.

But the point is that nobody actually buys it. For somebody to buy it that person must believe it is objectuvely superior, which is contrary to it.

By the way, I always LOVE your posts. You really open up discussion because you lack flippancy and sarcasm.

Its not actually religious but as you say 'in the name of religion'. The Koran is very clear that women have equal rights in inheritance and business.

The weird thing about this is it applies only to the Shiite's and not the Sunni's who are the majority of Afghani people. It was requested by the Shiite, yet these laws go beyond the laws of Shiite Iran next door to Afghanistan.

And I personally know a lot of women who would be perfectly okay with everything you quoted.

You know, there is a lot of different countries in this world which do not share your view of "perfect world". There is no gender equality, there is no tolerance to non-mainstream religions or sexual orientation. If you think this is wrong, did you write your congressmen and senators to ask them to withdraw fundings to those countries (including Israel, of course)? Or you're not doing something and this is just another post of "would someone think of the children"?

Prime candidate example to challenge the exclusive domain assertion: the policy and mindset that torture is rationalizable if “we” do it, but not if “they” do it.

That’s the penultimate moral relativism.

oh but they do buy it, but only because they don't understand basic logic. Or because they aren't thinking about it in logical, rational terms.

Or they don't really understand what "subjective" and "objective" mean.

and thank you for the compliment. Though often times i feel like no one actually reads or answers my serious posts because they AREN'T flippant or sarcastic. Maybe i should throw in some veiled PAs every once in a while? they seem to garner a modicum of respect here

True. I have posted here about my issues with the stereotypical defense lawyer antics.
"It's allowed because Gitmo is not US soil."
"But it is US Soil."
"Well, then, it's allowed because it is U.S. soil."

We see it all the time. We have nukes. NoKo wants them but they might do bad with them.

I owe you a beer.
