Palin calls for Begich to step down

In the wake of Stevens' vindication on charges of corruption, Gov. Sarah Palin is calling on Senator Begich to step down and allow Stevens to run against him again:

Mark Begich should give his Senate seat up to a special election now that prosecutors have abandoned their case against Ted Stevens. "Alaskans deserve to have a fair election not tainted by some announcement that one of the candidates was convicted fairly of seven felonies, when in fact it wasn't a fair conviction," Palin said in a Thursday interview with the Daily News.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on Tuesday joined top Republicans including her running mate, John McCain, and the Senate Republican leader in calling for Ted Stevens to resign from office.

"After being found guilty on seven felony counts, I had hoped Senator Stevens would take the opportunity to do the statesman-like thing and erase the cloud that is covering his Senate seat," Palin said in a written statement. "He has not done so. Alaskans are grateful for his decades of public service but the time has come for him to step aside."

Why this sudden change of heart? Is it that she did her own investigation, found he was actually innocent, and was keeping that a secret (and maintaining a false front of condemnation) until her operatives could get the facts to the Justice Department? Or is there some other reason?

It's not outrageous to suggest, but there's not a clear resolution either.

If prosecutors made up everything, tarnished him and cost him his Senate seat, and only now are revealed to be improper, what restitution is he entitled to? I don't think you can overturn election results, nor can you require a new election, or that the new guy resign.

Of course, if on the other hand you believe he was a bit of a slimeball and the DA's incompetence merely got him off, you wouldn't really see the same concern for his losses. One of those 'two wrongs makes a right, sorta' situations.

What's done is done. The election of a US Senator cannot be undone, unless the Senate decides not to seat the Senator, and even that prerogative is under legal challenge. Senator Begich has not committed any high crimes or misdemeanors and therefore cannot be impeached.

It's time for Ted Stevens to thank his lucky stars and enjoy his retirement.

Let's see, the Justice Department has now asked the judge to throw out the conviction and the judge is asking for the case papers/files to investigate misconduct of the lawyers who went after Stevens. (Does anybody know the political affiliation of the prosecutors?)

Hmmm, seems mabe this was a poitical trial to affect vote outcomes and not a criminal trial?

If true (and I dont say anybody knows yet) can you really say the election should be left to stand?

I only wonder at this point but, on both sides, this political game is getting very very dangerous

Why would Bush's Dept. of Justice want to go after Stevens for political reasons?

I didnt say they did. I did say that todays Justice dept has asked the judge to throw out the conviction.

I believe it was local offices that went after Stevens, not the feds
