billvon 3,176 #1 March 28, 2009 A classic case of good intentions + not enough thought = really dumb idea. CARB (California Air Resources Board) is talking about albedo limits on car paints, which would indirectly ban your basic nonreflective black color paint: http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/03/25/california-to-reduce-carbon-emissions-by-banning-black-cars/ On the pro-albedo-limits side, the auto body shops are all for it. quade 4 #4 March 28, 2009 QuoteWouldn't dark colors save energy in the not-summer months? I'm guessing that the idea is that white cars reflect the heat back into space and that dark cars absorb heat and therefore heat up the planet. This is actually true, but as much as 60°F.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

quade 4 #6 March 28, 2009 Quoteso are we going to see an end to black roofed houses and black tarmac then? Oh make no mistake, I'm not saying it makes sense to do it with cars, but, actually, it does make sense to do it with certain things. Houses? Probably yes. Roads? I doubt there is an alternative that makes sense.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
LongWayToFall 0 #7 March 28, 2009 Man. Right now asphalt is a huge recycling outlet. It is mostly made of broken up glass bottles and ground up tires. This law sucks! Its going to make people want a black car even more, so they will just go to Nevada to get it painted.
quade 4 #8 March 28, 2009 I can -almost- say with 100% certainty this isn't going to be the biggest issue on the planet. I really wouldn't worry about it.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
billvon 3,176 #9 March 28, 2009 >This law sucks! It is indeed idiotic; fortunately it was only an idea floated at a CARB workshop, and is not anywhere close to a law. (And hopefully won't get any closer.)
LongWayToFall 0 #10 March 28, 2009 Yeah its not a huge deal, but my hatred of the CARB runs deep. The money that could have been saved by not designating california another country code (E-33) would have saved millions and millions on motorcycle costs and repairs alone. Lots of other dumb emissions related stuff too. Example, my friends ford bronco is required to have an exhaust recirculating system (one of the few systems that really does help mileage, I will give it that) but the system is not required to be operational, so ford didn't even make it functional. It is just there adding weight and making the mileage even worse. I could say the same about charcoal canisters. If you have spilled even a tiny amount of gas while filling your tank, that is more evaporated gas entering the atmosphere than a carburetor ever vents. And what about MTBE? Woo hoo, we reduced emissions a little bit by oxygenating our fuel but now people are burning more fuel. Shit! Oh wait, MTBE just fucked up our ground water, Shit! Damn it sometimes I really hate the politics of this junk. Ok rant over.

TomAiello 26 #13 March 28, 2009 By far the most entertaining part of that is this: "...Windshields, backlights and sunroofs are also slated to get reflective coatings starting in 2012." When I was a kid in California, it was illegal to put reflective coatings on car windows. I had several friends get tickets for it in high school. Used to be illegal--now it's mandatory? JohnRich 4 #15 March 28, 2009 QuoteOn the pro-albedo-limits side, the auto body shops are all for it. Would pre-existing cars be required to be re-painted? Are we going to see pink limousines? What about those religious sects that drive only black cars as part of their religious beliefs - won't this conflict with their freedom of religion? And how are we going to know who the bad guys are? quade 4 #17 March 30, 2009 This just in . . . http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/uptospeed/2009/03/black-car-ban.html Quote The California Air Resources Board said Friday that it has no plans “at this time” to regulate car paint as part of a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions — and never intended to outlaw black cars in the first place.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
sundevil777 102 #18 March 30, 2009 Why isn't this worth doing - in all states? If global warming is such an imminent threat, why wouldn't this be just a small part of an overall strategy to stop the trend? It seems that it would have a very small effect, but so many other proposals that are considered worth doing also have very little effect, or even a negative effect (but worth doing anyway because of the political benefit). In terms of cost/benefit ratio, I don't see how there is any cost, there is only potential benefit, right? If this isn't worth doing, we should assume global warming really isn't worth worrying about.People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
