The hits are just as hard if not harder (without padding) and although hockey is extremely fast, its still not 40 minutes on a pitch running your arse off for a quick rest and 40 minutes again. Maybe the football players are more intelligent, both for wearing more protection and for making more money for the physical toll of the game. It's been about ten years since I've watched hockey regularly, but at least then, pretty much every team had a player whose job was to beat on the opposing team's best players. Rugby players may be tough, but they don't need pads because things happen more slowly than in hockey, and the rugby ball is also much larger and slower than a hockey puck. It's simple physics. K=(1/2)*m*v^2. Speed has a greater effect on energy than mass, and just as much effect as mass on momentum. Plus, they play on the soft ground instead of the hard ice.
