The state legislature voted today to repeal the death penalty, meaning New Mexico could become the 15th US state not to have capital punishment if the governor signs the bill into law.

Governor Bill Richardson has opposed a repeal in the past, but now says he would consider signing it. "I haven't made a final decision," the governor said this week.

The state senate voted 24-18 today in favour of the bill, which replaces capital punishment with a sentence of life without parole. The house approved it a month ago.

New Mexico, one of 36 states with capital punishment, has two men on death row whose sentences would not be affected by repeal.

The state has executed one man since 1960, convicted child killer Terry Clark in 2001.

New Jersey banned executions in 2007, the first state to do so since the US supreme court reinstated the death penalty in 1976.

Opponents of the death penalty said it does not deter murder and is administered unfairly, and that there's a risk of executing innocent people.

"As beautiful as our justice system is ... it is still a justice system of human beings, and human beings make mistakes," state senator Cisco McSorley, a Democrat from Albuquerque, said during nearly three hours of debate.

Many states are currently repealing the death penalty because of the exhorbitant cost of putting people to death. It's not about the old religions, it's about the new one - money.

i'm ok with that. if it costs less to keep someone in prison for life, then fuck the death penalty.

Except that the actual translation is supposed to be "thou shalt not murder".

Right, so you think a technicality is enough to justify killing people. Jesus must be so proud.

Numbers 35:31

Matthew 5:39

But if you want to use the Bible to justify violence, I assume you'll be happy to use Leviticus 20:13 as much as Numbers 35:31.

If you want to use verses from the OT, could you please explain Exodus 21:17 to me?

Also since the bible is said to be a bastion of morales and family values could you please tell me if you think Genesis 19:30 - 19:36 would be good for an animated bible story for children?

You didn't seem to have any problems quoting Exodus when you thought it to your advantage, now did you?

As for the verses, interpret them yourself. A little thicker skin when someone corrects your mistakes goes a long way, too.

A child who hits or curses his parents must be executed. Exodus 21:17-21:19

This just seems a bit harsh to me as does getting your father drunk to have sex with him so you will bare his children. Genesis 19:30 - 19:36

I dont remmember any of these stories from sunday school and I doubt many are read as bed time stories.

It seems the God of the OT and the God of the NT are two seperate Gods

If Jesus was supposed to be such a good and peaceful guy, how come his followers are such a bloodthirsty lot?

If Allah was supposed to be such and good and peaceful guy, how come his followers are such a bloodthirsty lot? (Middle East)

If Buddah was supposed to be such a good and peaceful guy, how come his followers are such a bloodthirsty lot? (China / Cambodia)

The same reason. They are all man made tools, constructed to control the masses and gaining power. With the possible exception of buddhism that don't have that believe in this or you will suffer for ever thing built in to it.

While some Christians would call this good news, many would not. That is also true for non-Christians. I am not sure of the connection.

not sure about the different Protestant churches, but the Catholic church has been pretty much anti-capital punishment across the board.

I agree fuck the threat of the death penalty. Being executed 20-30 yr's after sentencing is a joke.

As soon as we're born we're all facing a "death penalty"

Life in prison without parole is a very slow, nasty neighbors, shity food and gov't houseing no job advancement , cavity search every day, very slow death penalty.B|[:/]

OTOH the people in prison do have access to their gods and get to look for relief from their living hell once they accept god, die and go to heaven.:)

To bad some of them feel heaven can't come soon enough.

Which version? Who's translation. For any of us to announce that we know the correct translation is hubris. We have a vague idea at best.

Not really. Latae sentientae has not been declared for support of the death penalty or participation in its execution - unlike abortion. The reason for this is that one may make a very cogent and Catholic argument in favor of the death penalty.

I've no moral issue with the death penalty, rather I am against its use for fiscal reasons. We can't afford it.

With regards to its morality, those in opposition rarely wish to discuss why they disagree with St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas in particular and his objections and counters are quite well put. In fact, I can't recall anyone willing to discuss their opposition to the death penalty in context of their disagreement with either of those two doctors of the Church with regards to the death penalty - if they're of the opinion that it's morally unjustifiable, that is. They emulate democrats (except for Jeanne) talking about their support for racial discrimination - they run like cowards because they lack the courage to face facts.

I think its use should be discontinued so long as it's fiscally imprudent to execute the convicted.

You know what I love the most about the KKK, NeoNazi's, the Aryan Nations et al...... is they are honest about their hatred of others who are not like them.....and share their racism and sexism..and they are easy to spot..... they are up front about it rather than the closet racists/sexists who hide their hatred behind their "dislike" for political correctness or for any form of discrimination against them... HOW DARE anyone discriminate against them.... they ARE the ruling class and its just sooooo unfair:ph34r::ph34r:
