An upstanding republican

Recommended Posts

Governor Mark Sanford has spent a lot of time lately condemning the stimulus bill, calling it "Stalinist" etc etc. Basically saying what every other republican is saying. He actually 'put his money where his mouth is' so to speak and said he would not accept any money from the federal government under this stimulus bill. A few days ago:

==================
Interviewer: Governor Sanford, South Carolina has the third highest unemployment rate in the country. Under the package, you would get $8 billion that the White House says would create 50,000 jobs in your state, and yet you say you may not accept all of the money, including some of the money for unemployment benefits. Why not?

Mark Sanford: Two reasons. One, at times it sounds like the Soviet grain quotas of Stalin's time — X number of jobs will be created because Washington says so. And that's not the way that jobs get created.

I would secondly say what we are looking at is, in many cases, the money that would come to our state comes with substantial strings attached that, frankly, undo a lot of what we're trying to do at the state level.

Take, for instance, unemployment benefits. What we would be required to do would be, for the first time, increase the level of benefit for part- time workers. In other words, right now, it's full- time workers — increase it to part-time workers.

But this same fund had to go to the feds this fall to borrow $140 million, has come back to ask another $170 million from the fed. And so it becomes somewhat circular. We can't pay for the benefits already in the program, but to get the stimulus money, we've got to increase the program's size and scale.
===================

From the news yesterday:

===================
After weeks of criticizing the federal economic stimulus package, Gov. Mark Sanford has accepted the first offering to come from the plan.

He has agreed to a component that will pay an extra $25 a week to the state’s unemployed workers. Each state had to notify the federal government by Saturday if it was accepting the benefit, and Sanford made his decision then, said Joel Sawyer, the governor’s spokesman.

"It was something, literally, that every other governor had asked for," Sawyer said. "We could not find a compelling reason not to."
===================

Which is, of course, the upstanding republican thing to do. Wail and howl about how the stimulus package is no good, and it's Stalinist to take the money - then take the money and hope no one notices.

Nice hypocrisy, Bill - spend 8 years bashing Bush for NOT changing his mind on things, then bash a Republican governor when he does.

So he agreed to extend the unemployment benefits 25.00. I wonder what parts he will turn down, if any...time will tell I guess.

Keep in mind he is a politician, they ALL say one thing and do another. Welcome to politics...no- speak, double-speak, stupid-speak. The use of the tounge, lips and other body parts to sway the minds of others without ever educating them. Even deceiving them if necessary. Like it or not people judge private activities to a higher standard than they do public acts of the political process. All the more reason to grant them less power and control over our lives.

I think it's more like, say what you really feel, then do whatever brings in the most dollars. Sometimes those two things are in agreement (then the politician is "telling the truth"), and sometimes they are in opposition ("that lying bastard").

In this case, the Governor did the right thing, and listened to his advisors, who advised him that he better take the money, or he's going to be out of a job come next election. His supporters from the right will take no notice, and it's unlikely that the left will make a stink about it, because it doesn't involve sex, drugs or stealing. So, no harm, no foul.

And this is where politicians always fail. They become more concerned about keeping their jobs and compromise any ethics or independent thought they may have once had. [:/]

Once they get on that "anything to get reelected" kick, it's over. :(

Nope, they chose someone who has proven that he has no problem betraying the people he should be closest to, abandoning his post, and stealing the taxpayer's money so he can get his rocks off. Also, but not yet proven, he has allegedly repeatedly violated a court order. IOW, an arrogant, narcissistic prick who believes he is above the law. And Republicans claim to be the party of "family values", of "traditional values", of respect for the rule of law? Give me a break.

Looks like Mark will be facing the same sort of charges tomorrow. At least he's a right-thinking-Republican who believes in God, family, and duty-to-country.
I just think it's sad that these are the choices voters are faced with.

I always cringe a bit when I see threads like this. We have such an unattainable expectation of politicians and we're always surprised when they don't live up to the ideal. I'll venture a guess that more than 50% of the people who post in SC couldn't be vetted for office. I know I wouldn't.

If I ever had a head injury and decided to run for office, would just create a site with all my past listed out and then challenge anyone to find things not listed..

You got that right! I personally dislike republicans and democrats, and feel they are all crooked as hell,but I'm far more suspicious of democrats when it comes to being subjected to a nanny state.

I'm (ahem) planning on hiking the NH portion of the Appalachian Trail this summer -- and my husband approves! :D:D:D

I'll admit my tent is a solo tent, though

Lol.

The "jailbird" who got cited for contempt of court during her divorce 25 years ago.

Zzzzzzzz.

VS.

"He saw his political career disintegrate in summer 2009, when he disappeared for five days, telling his staff he was hiking the Appalachian Trail. He returned to admit in a tearful news conference he had been in Argentina with his mistress -- a woman to whom he is now engaged.
Sanford later paid a $70,000 ethics fine, the largest in state history, for using public money to fly for personal purposes. His wife and political ally, Jenny, divorced him. They have four sons."

He doesn't have a mugshot because embezzlement of state funds apparently just gets you an ethics fine....and abandoning your family for a hot Argentinian isn't illegal.

On second thought, now I see why you support him.
