rhys 0 #1 February 10, 2009 In victoria, heatwaves hotter then ever recorded (records bagan in 1850) have been taking place, bushfires are destroying entire towns and settlements, over 150 confirmed dead and many more to come. Meanwhile up in Queensland, tropical storms flood areas effecting 66% of the state (around the size of texas) with more to come. And some still refuse to believe climate change is happening. Bushfires and floods are always a threat in Australia (the land of drought and flood) but this is off the hook. billvon 3,120 #2 February 10, 2009 >And some still refuse to believe climate change is happening. While there is a lot of evidence that climate change is happening, one season of fires or floods in one location is not really indicative of such changes. It's what happens over the course of years worldwide that's the criterion.

It's the unseasonal international extremes that's significant; because it is; because it isn't a one off unseasonal international extreme either. In fact, make that a 'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" Meanwhile up in Queensland, tropical storms flood areas effecting 66% of the state (around the size of texas) with more to come. Even without climate change, settlements have lead to both increases in large fires - because we keep putting them out and denying nature its cleanup mechanism, and in big floods, because we tend to strip out the ground cover that mitigates floods. And the El Nino/La Nina cycle (which we seem to be in again) definitely has dramatic affects on both Australia and California, and has for centuries. Insisting single data points is conclusive proof is exactly the sort of thing your opposition jumps on to point out how much BS there is on the GW side, thus tarnishing all climate science. I'm glad i am up here in the tropics where it is cooler not in the temperate zone that is a raging inferno!!The smoke form the victoria fires has been seen in the south island of New Zealand! more than 200 dead now "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

wmw999 2,589 #13 February 10, 2009 A friend who lives there doesn't have air conditioning in his house because the weather is usually too moderate to require it. 46 C is so far out of the norm for him it's astounding. No, one summer isn't proof of global warming, but neither is it something to laugh about. Imagine if, say, San Francisco were to have a summer where it was like Phoenix. This is really bad. SStewart 13 #20 February 11, 2009 It looks like those fires are real close to the DZ in Nagambie. Has any of our mates down there been affected? I was a firefighter for the US forest service for 20 years and in 2005 I went down there with my wife on an employee exchange program. I am retired now but my wife is being considered to go back down there and help out, we should know in the next few days. As I remember the DZ is right in the same area. Onward and Upward! rhys 0 #21 February 11, 2009 QuoteIt looks like those fires are real close to the DZ in Nagambie. i hadn't thought of that yet, the horror af all those lives, homes and farms now destroyed was enough to think about. Still quite a few fires burning too. The largest fire fighting helecopter in the southern hemisphere is on its way over from New Zealand as well as the Aus army, and the NZ army. With a bit of luck they'll get back on top of it before the next heat wave/north wester that has been predictied comes through."When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix
