piper17 1 #126 January 29, 2009 I'm kinda partial to the M1 rifle and M1 carbines. Purchased an M1 Garand and 2 M1 carbines from the CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) which sells surplus M1 Garands, M1 carbines, Springfield 1903s etc to US civilians who can meet certain qualifications - veterans, state gun club members, etc. The CMP also sells surplus ammo for these - .30-06, .30 carbine at very good prices. I have purchased several thousand rounds for my Garands and will be ordering a thousand of the .30 carbine. Rather ironic...buying semi-auto rifles and ammo from a government-sponsored enterprise. AggieDave 6 #128 January 29, 2009 For uppers? I'm a huge fan of LaRue Tactical and Noveske. For the stock, I like MagPul CTR. Cheaper Than Dirt and Bravo Company USA have good prices and I like EoTech, that's what I run on my work gun. I use the 516 so I can use CR123 batteries (which everything else I have runs on), but its not NV compatible (which doesn't matter for me). Of course Badger Ordnance is a great shop to get parts from. Its owned by a skydiver's husband. http://www.badgerordnance.com/index.php The tactical latch is the cat's meow. Check out Bushmaster's stuff in regards to the piston system they sell. As for a lower, you could always call the same shop that did the work on your 1911 and see if they could order you one and set it aside for you. I'm willing to bet they'd accommodate. In fact, I'll be dropping by that shop in an hour or so, I'll ask for you to get the ball rolling. For BUIS you'll find that there are a LOT of options. Its really hard to go wrong with LaRue's stuff. Drop me an e-mail or a PM if you want and I can try to answer some questions, but I'm definately not an expert, there are some others out there that know a whole lot more than I do when it comes to black guns. Also, check out the book "Green Eyes and Black Rifles" its a good read. The MagPul tactical carbine DVD set is really well put together as well. You'd probably enjoy both! And no, you can't have my copies, those are currently out of my possession and is being passed around some of the trainers and tactical ninjas at work. JohnRich 4 #134 January 29, 2009 Quote the CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) Rather ironic...buying semi-auto rifles and ammo from a government-sponsored enterprise. And the gun-grabbers absolutely hate this program. They would much prefer that WWII surplus rifles be cut up and destroyed, rather than sell them to collectors. There's a ton of surplus M14 rifles that they would like to sell too, but we can't get a change in the law to allow that. Since M14's have a selector switch that can make them full-auto, that has to be disabled first. They have a way to do that, which is irreversible. But the law's language is a roadblock. And the necessary change ain't gonna happen in the next four years either.

Mad Up until a few months ago, *I* had never owned a gun either. I'm not some homicidal maniac, looking to shoot someone. I just want some ammo to target shoot at a range. What point is there in owning something you can't use? boinky 0 #138 February 1, 2009 Didya' ever try to buy a used Lightning? It's VERY to find one. That's because people horde them. Why? Because everyone else wants one. When they DO managed to go on the used market, the person who buys it is the one with the most money. And normally, that is NOT the one who needs it the most. As I'm sure you know, the Second Ammendment allows us to buy/stock up as we choose. Hindsight is 20-20. I respect and salute those who had the insight to realize that guns/ammo would be in short supply. And stocked up. Don't misunderstand me. Had I realized that this gun/ammo situation was going to happen, I undoubtedly would've done something different. If I had had the money, I would've stocked up or "horded" also. Probably gotten someone to teach me how to use powder and fill my own shells.Nina Are we called "DAWGs" because we stick our noses up people's butts? AggieDave 6 #139 February 1, 2009 Do you buy only the food you need daily or do you buy food for a week or two at a time? FOOD HOARDER! How dare you take more than you need right this instant? Oh, I also have a couple extra bottles of oil laying around the garage for my motorcycle, just in case I need it. Does that offend as well, or should I simply wait and buy some when I'm going to do my next oil change? Buying up extra ammo to have on hand is not a big deal. Especially when you can't find some that you need, you buy extra so you don't have to worry as much next time you want to go plink (that's target shooting).--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." JohnRich 4 #145 February 2, 2009 QuoteHording ammo and weapons is different to owning a gun and having a box or two of ammo! Yeah, it means you can go target shooting more often with more options for more fun. And that's all. Why do you presume that because someone keeps an ample supply of ammo on-hand, that there's something evil about that? Please be specific in explaining how you believe this is dangerous to society. Warning: this will require that you think. A criminal only needs 6 bullets in a revolver to hold up a whole string of convenience stores. Perhaps you should worry about that guy, instead of the honest person who has six boxes, so he can go shoot for fun whenever he feels like it.
piper17 1 #146 February 2, 2009 Don't wait too long if you want an M1, 1903, or M1 carbine. About the only firearms they seem to have available anymore is stuff they are bringing back into the USA from places like Denmark, Greece and Italy. I think most or all of the domestic milsurp firearms have dried up. Doesn't seem to be any shortage of .30-06 (Lake City and Greek stuff) from the CMP but the .30 carbine they offer is all commercial ammo."A man can never have too much red wine, too many books, or too much ammunition"...Rudyard Kipling

Self defense if I had to, but mostly just for the fun of it. Going to shoot holes in a little piece of paper and seeing how accurate you can be is very stress relieving. I want to make sure that I have enough ammo on hand to allow me that one simple pleasure. If I have to stock up to prevent running out, then so be it.
