porpoishead 8 #1 January 5, 2009 figured to cont. this discussion here, let the folks have their fun with the cack in the mirror picture. I will be purchasing an HK 91 or one of the PTR clones. genie you wrote that you don't like the rail options on the PTR?? the KFM4's that I'm looking at have (3) 6.5" accessory rails mounted on the hand guard but do not list an option for a scope mount. on yours is there any way to add a scope mount on the top other than welding one on??? or are you saying that the scope mount options available suck...if you want a friend feed any animal Perry Farrell
Amazon 7 #2 January 5, 2009 The rail options are out there, but they are a screw pressure fit on the top of the receiver. There are some bumps on the top where the rail can be mounted to.. but I know how SHIT happens and any other weapon I have the mounts are far more rigid than what I can see being done with the available bosses put there for this reason after looking at an HK. I think there is the same issue with the HK as well Sorry but I like my optics to stay put, no matter HOW you might bump them, even f you are skidding down a mountainside way up in the high country( ok.. I hunt in some rather rough back country) My biggest problem with getting an HK was one of value. Every one of them I saw was damn near double or triple what a PTR cost. If ANYTHING was hung on the HK, its coolness value was raised exponentially in the sellers mind. Mine came with some VERY nice rails, to affix whatever you want. I kinda put all the goodies on the GSG for now.. green laser.. flashlight....grip... and holo.... since that one is better suited to up close and very personal.. oh and a whole lot cheaper to shoot than the .308. I am more interested in getting really long range optics for the PTR. Both the PTR and the GSG have the barrel rear sight which, while adequate and VERY usable, is just not good glass. I like optics and I want something on it more appropriate in glass for the .308 round. What can I say.. I am old and decrepit Might I mention that there is a WORLD of furniture and parts out there for the H K and so far anything I have picked up for my black not so shiny tool, will fit just as if it was made for it. I purchased a few magazines for it... ( I HATE reloading magazines if I was ever to have to use more than one I wanted plenty available) and some are VERY nice and sturdy HK mags, while others are just very light weight stamped parts… that I guess would be suitable to shoot and toss if that was ever an issue. porpoishead 8 #3 January 5, 2009 right on I'm with you, I like my scope to stay put and hold zero. couple of guys I talked to reccomended the claw mount from Bsquare that clamps on to the receiver. they said it is plenty sturdy, allows use of the iron sights, can be removed and replaced all day long and will still hold zero. only drawback they mentioned was it might dimple a few spots in the finish on the receiver where it attaches. also my pops said that the PTR's are better quality than most of the original HK's. the co. JLD that makes the PTR's bought the tooling and parts from a European country that made the original HK's for the Portuguese military under license from H&K. he said JLD manufactures here in the US with better quality control. the welds look better. some original parts are used in the construction of the PTR's but most parts including the receivers and a heavier barrel are manufactured new using the same tooling that built the originals. PTR's had a problem in there first production run with the trunions/buffer but it was only around 100 rifles and has long since been worked out. last thing he said is the HK's are worth more only as a collectors item because they are no longer made/imported. but the PTR's are every bit as accurate if not more due to the heavier barrels and the better construction. oh he also said the triggers suck on all of them even the originals but he's got a guy that can correct the triggers, for $50 he will have them smoothed out and under 3 lbs.if you want a friend feed any animal Perry Farrell
