While his work was very important, I would argue that Edward Jenner saved many more lives when he began work on vaccines by using cowpox to vaccinate people against smallpox. This led directly to the devolpment of many more vaccines over the years.

Well you could look at it as he enabled us to feed ourselves using much less land than we otherwise would have had to. More room for parks and strip malls.

Perhaps while you're perusing the halls of wikipedia, you might also want to research a thing or two about food production, natural resources, and the root causes of hunger (hint: it has little to do w/ overpopulation and much to do w/ tribal warfare and corrupt govts. and classes starving other tribes and classes).
