Conundrum

How do you think the "no gay marriage" people would vote for a divorce ban proposition?

Recommended Posts

Everyone I have talked to that says they voted yes for banning gay marriage has done it for religious reasons. "marriage is for men and women only" I'm wondering how they'd vote if there were a prop to ban divorce (i.e. forcing them to abide by "til death do us part" in their vows)? I doubt it would pass... then again, it's not uncommon for religious people to bend the rules to their convenience.

How predictable. Prop 8 gets passed and a thread appears in which religious people start getting bashed.

I find it very amazing that even in the state of California, a prop 8 was passed.

Really? How about Prop 22?

I have a feeling that you're like a lot of people that don't have a freekin' clue how conservative a lot of California is.

BTW, do you have any idea who the main sponsors of the proposal were? Hmmm.

In spite of your often antagonistic tone, I'll respond by say that in comparison to many, many other states in the union, California is considered pretty liberal.

And yes, I know exactly who the sponsors on both sides were. It's public record.

Is what I said not true? How many people do you know that are religious who have had sex before marriage? Who have gotten divorced? Who have had children out of wedlock? Catholics who use contraception? Yet most of them are against gay marriage because it's "wrong in the eyes of the church".

People want to call themselves religious and faithful yet they only pick and choose with "rules" they feel like following.

Uh, I don't think there is a "sponsor" on the opposition side. If you "know" then why are you in the least bit surprised by the reaction?

If an insane rabid dog bit you, I wouldn't be surprised if harbored ill will toward insane rabid dogs.

And if that insane rabid dog had bit you before . . . (kinda like prop 22) . . . my guess is your ill will is pretty justified.

My wife did not have sex before marriage. She has never used contraception. She's never been divorced. While she enjoys a good glass of wine, she has never abuse alcohol or drugs. She is, by far, one of the happiest, most joyfilled persons I have ever met in my life. The same with all of her sisters. Same with many of our Catholic friends. However, I have no doubt that you or perhaps someone else may make some disparaging remark about my wife, her siblings or some of our friends. Still, the truth is what it is. I know these people.

That is not the same with me. I'm a former drug addict who was a complete man-whore before I discovered faith. True about many of my friends. The difference between this group and the former group is that we believe in change. That people can make mistakes in life but later correct those mistakes and live better lives. The stories of recovering addicts are perfect examples here. However, if a person is "overly" religious, you would perfer to call them a hypocrite.

There is a third group who does in fact pick and chose what tenets of their religious they want to follow, all the while condemning others for their choices in life. I have nothing but contempt for such people. That sort of cafetia-religiousity, that lukewarm banality is nauseating and indeed is something to be condemned.

However, it is an injustice to brand EVERY person of faith with that brush.

Absolutely not. Well, not me anyway. I respect other people and what they believe in (as long as it's not pushed on me). I have a very Catholic family as well.

The fact is, your wife is the exception, not the rule. Most people do not follow their religion like your wife, though there are some who do. The part that gets me is that I would put money on the majority of "yes" prop 8 voters to be those people who pick and choose the rules.

every side has sponsors, if by sponsor you mean the people/organizations who are ponying up the funds either side.

Thank you for the respect. I'm sorry for lumping you automatically in a category you don't deserve to be in. I'm justifiably very defensive of my beloved wife, she's very dear to me (she is of course, my wife! ;)). I'm shell-shocked from living in secular society that does not respect the choices we have made and that feels very free to express their disdain in very vocal and rude ways towards us and our peers.

Unfortunately there are too many people who are as you describe. I would however be hesitant to say that "most" of them are as you say. Maybe it's the eternal optimist of my wife coming through.

Imagine having some group that tried to pass an Amendment against that lifestyle.

You've supplied your own intolerance irony.

Our society, and in fact civiliation, is built on the instituation of marriage and the family. And because people like you can't have your way, a way you think in all your 30 or 40 years of wisdom is so much better than so many millions of others, you spew your hate and vitriol towards people who want to preserve the very institution that keeps society healthy.

Really? Support that with anything. Anything at all. There is no basis in anthropology for it I can assure you. Please, show me where that is a "fact."

Actually, our society was built upon freedom, and the separation of church and state, to name a few things.

Really. Really? He is spewing hate? Wait a minute, I forgot... who is the one that thinks consenting adults should not be able to live their lives as they choose, because it offends his religious sensibilities? And you call the people who defend those rights hateful? What are those people doing to your rights? Where is their hate? Why are you blind to your own? I cannot comprehend such a beautiful instance of irony.

I agree with what some others have said: Get the government out of the marriage business entirely.

When you turn 18, you get to assign one person who will be your partner in all the legal crap that government needs to be concerned with, such as inheritance, visitation rights, living wills, etc. etc. Before you get married that person could be a parent or sibling or friend or whatever. You can assign whomever you want.

The government will no longer be in a position to say yes or no to ANY marriage. and there will be nothing to argue about.

People are capable of protecting family values without the Almighty Government holding their hand.

um... pardon me, but if you would go back and read...

he was the one who referred to certain people as "insane rabid dogs"

and, for your edification, it does not, let me repeat, does not, mr. assumptionata, offend any of my religious sensibilities for anyone to live their life as they chose.

it is not hateful to want to defend the institution of marriage. if two men or two women want to live their lives "as they choose", that's not my concern. just don't call it marriage. that's a farce.

it is hateful to resort to name calling and spewing vitriolic prejudices, like quade does so well, when segments of society can't advance their liberal agenda.

i have done no such name calling. i believe that you have a fundamental comprehension problem in this thread.

Do you think that a divorce ban would be a good way to defend the institution of marriage?

Back in 1967, when some states still had laws banning interracial marriage, this is what the Supreme Court had to say:

Quote

Marriage is one of the "basic civil rights of man," fundamental to our very existence and survival.... To deny this fundamental freedom on so unsupportable a basis as the racial classifications embodied in these statutes, classifications so directly subversive of the principle of equality at the heart of the Fourteenth Amendment, is surely to deprive all the State's citizens of liberty without due process of law. The Fourteenth Amendment requires that the freedom of choice to marry not be restricted by invidious racial discrimination. Under our Constitution, the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual and cannot be infringed by the State.

I hope that we will one day be hearing something similar from the Court regarding same-sex marriage. We shouldn't be allowing a simple majority vote to take away rights from a minority group of people.
